Looking to bounce back from a disappointing US Open campaign, things didn’t quite go to plan for Frances Tiafoe at the Davis Cup.

Playing his first match since losing in the third round of the US Open, Tiafoe took on Jiri Lehecka in the first match of Team USA’s Davis Cup qualifying tie vs Czechia.

In straight sets, Tiafoe fell to Lehecka, 3-6, 2-6, suffering yet another Davis Cup defeat, as his record at the event slumps to 1-6.

There’s still work to be done for Tiafoe in Florida, as he is scheduled to play Jakub Mensik in the fifth match.

When the tie is over, Tiafoe will have an important decision to make, as his ATP form continues to decline.

Frances Tiafoe should consider taking a brief break from tennis

12 months ago, Tiafoe looked to be one of the form players on tour, thanks to his excellent performances on North American hard courts.

After reaching the final of the Cincinnati Open, Tiafoe qualified for his second US Open semifinal, losing to Taylor Fritz in a deciding fifth set.

A year on, Tiafoe is struggling and has only qualified for the one quarterfinal during the US Open series, at the ATP 500 Washington Open.

Unable to bounce back at the Davis Cup, perhaps now is the time for Tiafoe to make a bold move.

Resting up for a few weeks, or perhaps for the remainder of the season, could allow the exciting American to return fresh in 2026.

Tiafoe has already withdrawn from the upcoming Laver Cup tournament, suggesting he is aware of the effect his busy schedule is having on him.

Whether or not he decides to take a break, Tiafoe will still want to finish strong at the Davis Cup, an event he loves.

Frances Tiafoe explains why he loves the Davis Cup

During an interview with the Davis Cup ahead of his match with Lehecka, Tiafoe had this to say about the ‘World Cup of Tennis’.

“Just such a big deal. I mean, Davis Cup match, especially as Americans, we’ve just killed it for so many years, won it numerous times, just to wear the jacket and be part of the team,” he said.

“I still practice here all the time. I think the conditions definitely suit my game, and yeah, it’s going to be hot, it’s going to be warm, but I’ll try to get out there and give it everything I’ve got. US fans are going to be jumping, South Florida. We’re going to be hyped up. It’s going to be great.”

Tiafoe proceeded to explain why he feels patriotic when competing at the Davis Cup.

“My record throughout my career is really high, win rate in the States, so I love playing in the States more than anything,” he said.

“I mean, there are a lot of things that make you feel good about being in America. The louder the crowd gets, the louder I get. That’s our move.

“We’re really hungry. We’ve really got to make a dent in this thing and get ourselves in a position to contend for this. Obviously, there are some great teams.

“The one thing I enjoy the most about Davis Cup, just playing for the flag; there’s nothing really like it. It’s not about me, it’s about the guys.

“We’ve all got one common goal and come together, and this is not a team sport, man. So, to just come together for one common goal, not just money-driven, that’s pride-driven. You get patriotic here, right?”

Team USA are currently level at 1-1 against Czechia, with a doubles tie between Austin Krajicek/Rajeev Ram and Tomas Machac/Adam Pavlasek set to kick off day two.
