Emma Raducanu has already started making plans for 2026 after a disappointing end to the season.
Raducanu ended her season early after struggling with illness during the Asian swing, but she is already looking ahead to her next tournaments.
This was made clear after it was announced that Raducanu would be making her debut at the United Cup in January, representing Great Britain alongside fellow British number one Jack Draper.
Raducanu has received criticism for not representing her country before, and this seems like a brilliant decision from the Brit.

Emma Raducanu has made a great decision in signing up for the United Cup
Ever since Raducanu won the US Open in 2021, she has come under a lot of scrutiny for nearly every decision that she makes, a lot of which has been unjustified.
Whether that be for her coaching changes or off-court commitments, Raducanu has seemingly been an easy target for British tennis fans, despite being their most successful women’s singles player since Virginia Wade.
One of the latest cases of this came when Raducanu withdrew from Britain’s Billie Jean King (BJK) Cup Finals lineup.
The reason behind this decision was for Raducanu to spend more time with new coach Francisco Roig, but it did not stop a significant amount of criticism.
While Raducanu’s justification for this decision may have been understandable, the decision to not represent your country is always going to be a controversial one, something that has been experienced by Jannik Sinner after he withdrew from the Davis Cup Finals.
It has been some time since Raducanu last represented Great Britain in the BJK Cup, with her last appearance coming in November 2024, and it feels about time that she represents her nation again.
Raducanu thrives when she has the home crowd behind her, and that was proven at Wimbledon earlier this year.
She also has an impressive record when representing her country, with Raducanu playing a huge role in Great Britain’s run to the BJK Cup semifinals last year after winning all five of her singles matches.
Raducanu could do with taking some pressure away from herself, and playing alongside fellow British star Draper is the perfect way to do that to get her 2026 season underway in Australia.
Emma Raducanu should have a bigger goal than just being seeded for the Australian Open
Raducanu has never played at the United Cup before, and has previously used tournaments in Auckland and Adelaide instead to prepare for the Australian Open.
Other than easing some of the criticism from herself, Raducanu could also benefit in terms of her ranking.
Raducanu has been very open about her goal to be seeded for the Australian Open, and as the world number 29 is in a very strong position to do so, but she should be aiming for more.
At all four of the Grand Slam tournaments this year, Raducanu has been unable to surpass the third round, but all of her defeats have come against top 10 seeded players, who also happen to be Grand Slam champions.
Two of these have been heavy defeats for Raducanu against Iga Swiatek, having won only four games across two matches at the Australian Open and the French Open.
| Grand Slam | Player who beat Emma Raducanu this year |
| Australian Open | Iga Swiatek (2) beat Raducanu, 6-1 6-0 (Third Round) |
| French Open | Iga Swiatek (5) beat Raducanu, 6-1 6-2 (Second Round) |
| Wimbledon | Aryna Sabalenka (1) beat Raducanu, 7-6(6) 6-4 (Third Round) |
| US Open | Elena Rybakina beat Raducanu (9), 6-1 6-2 (Third Round) |
Even if Raducanu was to be seeded at the Australian Open using her current ranking, she would still be forecasted to play a top eight seed in the third round.
However, players who are seeded between 17 and 24 will be granted a much greater benefit in draws, as they will not play a top eight seeded player until at least the fourth round.
Therefore, Raducanu needs to make the United Cup a big priority so that she can continue climbing up the rankings.
The United Cup is a team event, but there are still big ranking point offerings and players can earn up to a maximum of 500 points, which would be more than enough to fulfil this goal for Raducanu.
