Emma Navarro has endured a disappointing start to 2026, but she now has a fantastic chance to turn her fortunes around at the Merida Open.
Navarro has been very busy so far in the new WTA season, but has struggled to gain any form of momentum.
Her struggles continued at the Dubai Tennis Championships, where the American fell in just the second round.
Navarro suffered the same fate at the Qatar Open, which followed opening match defeats at both the Australian Open and the Abu Dhabi Open.
She was seeded at every tournament, and that is now the case at the Merida Open, where she has a fine chance of clinching the title.

Emma Navarro has perfect chance to win the Merida Open
Navarro is the second seed at the Merida Open, with the WTA 500 tournament set to get underway in Mexico shortly.
And the draw has certainly worked out in her favor, with the American earning a bye into the second round thanks to her seeding.
She will then meet a qualifier in the round of 16, and could meet the lowest-seeded Magda Linette in the quarterfinals.
Importantly, she can only meet top seed Jasmine Paolini in the final, but the Italian has a tricky path to get there.
She could meet wildcards Sloane Stephens and Katie Boulter, with the likes of Zeynep Sonmez and Janice Tjen also representing potentially tricky ties.

Emma Navarro’s WTA career rankings history
Also very much boosting Navarro’s potential chances of success this week is her history at the Merida Open.
She won the tournament in 2025, securing her second career title on the WTA Tour after winning Hobart in 2024.
But her struggles of late have forced Navarro down to 19th in the rankings, well off her career-high of eighth in the world.

The American had been enjoying a superb rise until recently, but there is plenty of time to get things back on track given that she is just 24.
Importantly, Navarro is now playing at a tournament she knows how to win, having done so extremely comfortably last time out.
She defeated Emiliana Arango 6-0, 6-0, which at the time represented just the fifth 6-0, 6-0 final this century.
| Top rank by year | Year-end ranking | |
| 15 | 2026 | – |
| 8 | 2025 | 15 |
| 8 | 2024 | 8 |
| 32 | 2023 | 38 |
| 127 | 2022 | 143 |
| 233 | 2021 | 233 |
| 462 | 2020 | 463 |
| 412 | 2019 | 486 |
| 565 | 2018 | 763 |
Navarro doesn’t get the same attention as other Americans, but that may just work in her favor as she looks to quietly get back to her best.
That arguably arrived at the end of 2024 and into 2025, when she reached the US Open semifinals and the Wimbledon and Australian Open quarterfinals.
