Coco Gauff has cause for concern despite latest win over Leylah Fernandez in China

Coco Gauff came through a tough match against Leylah Fernandez to reach the last 16 at the China Open.

Gauff uses the China Open as a practice tournament, and she is hoping to defend the crown she won last year at this year’s event.

Gauff was criticised for one aspect of her game at the US Open, and after taking some time to rest and recover, she’s now back on the march.

Despite winning against Fernandez on Sunday, problems are still crippling Gauff on the court and some serious changes need to be made if she’s to really start to dominate the sport.

Coco Gauff still has serious issue to sort

Gauff’s serve is of huge concern right now and she managed to serve six double faults again during the win over Fernandez.

Furthermore, the Canadian broke Gauff on seven occasions during the match and that simply shouldn’t be happening to a player as good as Gauff.

Tracy Austin has given Gauff some advice previously and it’s got to the point where the American needs some help to arrest the alarming serve issue.

At 21, Gauff is still learning all the time, and with two Grand Slam titles to her name, this is far from a concern of epic proportions at this stage.

It’s fair to say the number of double faults to come from the racket of Gauff is astonishing.

The youngster has served a staggering 347 this year alone, almost 100 more than Ekaterina Alexandrova in second, who has served 252.

If seeing that statistic doesn’t spark Gauff into life, then nothing will and it’s ultimately up to her to leave no stone unturned in a quest to lower that figure.

Gauff has shown that she can win major titles even with this flaw in her game, but if it can be ironed out, she could truly start to dominate the game, given how good the other parts of her game are on a consistent basis.
