Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner met six times on the ATP Tour in the 2025 season, but have been kept apart thus far in 2026.
Remarkably, all six of those meetings between the two ATP superstars took place in finals, three of which were at Grand Slams.
Alcaraz and Sinner have built up the perfect rivalry over the years, with fans patiently awaiting a first clash of 2026.
And that could finally arrive at the Monte Carlo Masters, where both players won their opening matches very comfortably.
A final clash in Monte Carlo represents the ideal setting for their first locking of horns, not least because it’s an ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
Will Carlos Alcaraz bounce back by winning the Monte Carlo Masters?
If not, who will win the title?
The ATP needs a Carlos Alcaraz vs Jannik Sinner Monte Carlo Masters final
While fans will be desperate for another Alcaraz versus Sinner epic, the same can be said of the ATP Tour.
In the early stages of the season, it was the Spaniard who completely dominated proceedings.
Alcaraz won the Australian Open and the Qatar Open, but quickly saw the tides turn at the Sunshine Double.
His fierce rival Sinner took over the dominance mantle, winning Indian Wells and the Miami Open, remarkably without dropping a single set.
With two titles apiece, a Monte Carlo Masters final between Sinner and Alcaraz is the absolute perfect setting for the rivalry to continue.
The stunning backdrop simply adds to the narrative, as does their unforgettable clay-court clash of 2025.
On the biggest stage of them all, Alcaraz battled past Sinner to clinch last year’s French Open title after five hours and 29 minutes.
It was the longest final in the history of the tournament, and suggests that another clay-court epic is possible should they make it all the way in Monte Carlo.
Such a final would really benefit the ATP Tour, which so far this season has witnessed surprise exits from either Alcaraz or Sinner throughout the early stages of 2026.
Is the Monte Carlo Masters the best ATP 1000 tournament?
If not, which tournament do you consider to be better?
Why Jannik Sinner should be more motivated than Carlos Alcaraz
Not that Alcaraz has any major plans to slow down, but the most momentum should be with his main rival right now.
Claims that Alcaraz is bored are way off, with the Spaniard undoubtedly desperate for further glory, beginning with a successful title defence at the Monte Carlo Masters.
He has, however, conceded that the Italian will surpass him as world number one, which should have been a real motivator for Sinner even before that admission.
But their head-to-head record has also slipped out of his hands in recent times, with Alcaraz winning 10 of their 16 career matches.

Closing that gap may not be a priority for the current world number two, but it should be really inspiring him every time they take to the court.
It is an ongoing duel that is reminiscent of epic rivalries of old, and one that Sinner needs to keep tabs on in order to avoid an unwanted head-to-head history with Alcaraz long after they have retired.
