Alexandra Eala is up and running on clay in 2026, winning her opening match at the Linz Open in Austria.
Eala defeated Julia Grabher in the first round of the WTA 500 tournament, requiring one hour and 42 minutes to win 6-4, 6-3.
The Filipina superstar is unseeded at the event, which she entered with a 14-8 win-loss record for the season.
Still seeking a maiden career title, Eala can take great pride in making a smooth transition from hard courts to clay courts.
She particularly impressed with her serve, which is an area that the world number 46 has somewhat struggled with throughout her promising career.

Alexandra Eala’s impressive serving stats in opening clay win
Eala must improve her serve to reach her full potential.
That is particularly relevant when it comes to committing fewer double faults, of which she recorded three against Grabher, and perhaps serving more aces.
However, she finished the match with an impressive first serve figure of 60.2%, and 68% of her first serve points won, winning 63.9% of her total service points.
Moreover, Eala recorded a break points saved figure of 90%, having saved nine out of 10 against the Austrian, another surprisingly impressive number given her serving history.
The hard-fought victory has earned the WTA rising star a second round clash with Jelena Ostapenko, the fourth seed in Linz.

Alexandra Eala’s superb head-to-head with Jelena Ostapenko
Eala and Ostapenko are heading for their third career meeting on the WTA Tour, and it is the former who holds all of the bragging rights.
The Filipina has won both of their matches so far, triumphing in their Miami Open round of 64 tie and Eastbourne round of 16 clash, both in 2025.
But this will be their first ever meeting on clay, the surface on which Ostapenko claimed her only Grand Slam title at the 2017 French Open.
Intriguingly, they did just come face-to-face in doubles at Indian Wells, where the Latvian partnered with Hailey Baptiste to beat Eala and Iva Jovic 6-2, 6-2 in round one.
| Year | Tournament | Round | Surface | Winner | Score |
| 2025 | Eastbourne | Round of 16 | Grass | Eala | 0-6, 6-2, 3-2 (Ret.) |
| 2025 | Miami | Round of 64 | Hard | Eala | 7-6(2), 7-5 |
Alexandra Eala confirmed for Rome after Stuttgart main draw boost
It is looking likely to be a busy clay-court swing for Eala, who will be fully focused on her efforts in Linz right now.
But she will head to Stuttgart immediately after, where it has just been confirmed that she will enter the main draw.
That comes after the withdrawal of Qinwen Zheng due to injury, with Eala replacing the Chinese star in the WTA 500 tournament in Germany.
And the Filipina superstar has also just been confirmed for Rome, with that WTA 1000 tournament set to get underway at the beginning of May.
