The 2025 French Open has once again ended in bitter disappointment for Alexander Zverev as he bowed out at the quarter-final stage to Novak Djokovic.
Zverev has been here and worn the t-shirt several times over at a Grand Slam event. He’s now lost at the quarter-final stage on six occasions to go with six semi-final defeats and three finals.
On Wednesday night, things were going well. Zverev won the first set but was then blown away in the next three as Djokovic decided it was time to take a stroll down memory lane and produce some of the best tennis he’s ever played.
Unlike Zverev, Djokovic finds a way. He has forged a career – a successful one at that – at trying to return every single ball, and he’s comfortably the best returner that has ever existed in tennis.
The German once again has more questions than answers and after this latest Grand Slam setback, a damning statistic has showcased what the real problem is that he must correct quickly.

Alexander Zverev has to overcome huge weakness if he’s to win a Grand Slam
Right now, Zverev isn’t proving to be a man for the big occasion when it comes to Grand Slam events.
After his defeat to Djokovic on Wednesday, an alarming statistic came to light and it involves Zverev and coming up against players in the top 10 of the world rankings.
He now has a win percentage of just 25% when it comes to wins against players in the top 10 at Grand Slam events – the lowest of any top 10 player to have played a minimum of 10 matches against fellow top 10 players since the rankings system began in 1973.
It’s a truly dismal run of form against fellow top 10 players and Zverev needs to rectify it immediately if he’s to ever take a big title home.
Zverev facing real fight to win a Grand Slam
Sadly for Zverev, not only does he have Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz to contend with, but Djokovic doesn’t look to be going away either.
As a result, his prospects of claiming one of the game’s four big titles do feel like they’re decreasing with every crushing defeat that comes his way.
Zverev has the portfolio of shots to beat the big players, but in his Roland Garros defeat against Djokovic, he was far too safe and passive after winning the opening set.
The German’s form against top 10 players has simply not been good enough and he must now approach Wimbledon with a point to prove if he can progress through the draw and meet a top player once again.
