Wimbledon is rapidly approaching, with the third major of the year set to get underway at the beginning of July.

The pinnacle of the grass court season, the competition will see the world’s top players head to London in a bid to lift the iconic trophy.

And one player looking to go on a lengthy run is Dominic Thiem, given that it will be his last appearance at the tournament.

The 30-year-old is set to retire at the end of the season after enduring a very difficult time with a wrist injury.

The Austrian has been given extra motivation to succeed on the grass following his very disappointing time at the French Open.

Wimbledon make a wildcard decision on Dominic Thiem

The two-time runner-up suffered a loss in second round qualifying in Paris, losing 6-2, 7-5 to Otto Virtanen, but was quick to express his gratitude to fans despite the exit.

His attention will now turn to Wimbledon, with journalist Jose Morgado now providing an update on Thiem’s presence in London.

Reporting on X, the journalist said that it looks like the 30-year-old will have a main draw wildcard to play at Wimbledon one final time.

The Austrian will be delighted with the news after missing out on a wildcard at Roland Garros, a decision he felt was justified after failing to climb the rankings.

Can Dominic Thiem go out in style at Wimbledon?

Thiem has enjoyed a superb career, but it is one that has sadly been disrupted by injury in more recent years.

The Austrian hit a career-high number three in the ATP world rankings back in 2020, the year in which he won his only Grand Slam title, lifting the US Open trophy.

A superb 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(8-6) victory was secured over Alexander Zverev, who has incidentally just lost another five-set final, with the German beaten by Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 at the French Open.

Thiem meanwhile has been beaten in three of his four Grand Slam finals, two of which came against Rafael Nadal in the French Open.

Those back-to-back finals in 2018 and 2019 were followed by a 2020 Australian Open final defeat to Novak Djokovic.

Thiem clearly has a preference for hard and clay courts over grass, but he will be desperate for a successful farewell on the Wimbledon grass next month.
