Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner will head to Indian Wells as the top two seeds and heavy favorites.

The Spaniard and Italian have been a class above on the ATP Tour recently and are expected to contest the final of any tournament they both attend.

So, will they meet in the Indian Wells final?

Maybe not, according to Serena Williams’ former coach Rick Macci…

The legendary coach took to X to share his thoughts on Alcaraz and Sinner’s chances at Indian Wells.

“The wind, if breezy at Indian Wells/Miami, can give players a better shot at [Carlos] Alcaraz and [Jannik] Sinner,” said Macci.

“It can be the wild card as the margins are so close, and bang, you win or lose a few points and matches just because of wind.”

The weather, as Macci rightly pointed out, is often windy at the two ‘Sunshine Double’ Masters 1000 events.

Indian Wells, in particular, has been affected by the wind over recent years.

One of Alcaraz’s breakout performances is best remembered for the windy conditions.

Trailing Rafael Nadal by a set to love in the 2022 Indian Wells semifinals, the wind picked up in California.

What followed was one of the most remarkable games in the sport’s history.

Both players struggled to keep track of the ball in a marathon 20-minute game.

Eventually, Alcaraz broke, taking advantage of the conditions to take a 5-4 lead in the second set.

He won the set but lost the match in a decider to his fellow Spaniard.

Those conditions have always been present at Indian Wells, and may have contributed to several surprise finals over the years.

Six of the last 10 Indian Wells men’s singles champions have been seeded lower than fifth.

And just one of the last 10 Indian Wells men’s singles finals has been contested by the top two seeds.

Alcaraz and Sinner won’t want to be the victims of an upset in Indian Wells, but how well have they performed in California over the years?

Alcaraz is a two-time champion, winning titles in 2023 and 2024.

Incidentally, Alcaraz defeated Sinner en route to both victories, knocking the Italian out in the semifinals.

Looking at the numbers, Alcaraz certainly looks to be the favorite.

But, if Macci is correct and they are to be more vulnerable than at other events, who could threaten the seemingly inevitable Alcaraz/Sinner final?

Well, you could really pick anyone in the top 10.

Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz are both former champions, although the former has struggled at Indian Wells as of late.

Perhaps the likes of Lorenzo Musetti, Alex de Minaur, or Felix Auger-Aliassime could take advantage of the windy conditions and claim their first Masters 1000 titles.

It remains to be seen who will emerge victorious in California, but you certainly won’t want to miss any of the action.
