Novak Djokovic’s record around the world

If he were to win the title in Greece, he would take his tally to 19 different countries.

Only time will tell if Djokovic can get the job done on his Athens debut, but you certainly won’t want to miss any of the action when he plays his opening match on Tuesday, November 4.

Why Novak Djokovic is playing the Hellenic Championship

The event was originally supposed to be held in Belgrade, Serbia, Djokovic’s home country.

However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the tournament moved to Athens, but Djokovic chose to honor his commitment and play anyway.

In a recent interview, Djordje Djokovic (Djokovic’s brother and Hellenic Championship tournament director) explained why the event was moved from Belgrade to Athens.

“This year, we were unable to overcome the difficulties we had for logistical reasons, and we reached the point of having to move the tournament,” he said.

“It was very difficult to do it as Serbs – I was born and raised in Belgrade. It was also very difficult, because we started organizing the event many months ago and had to throw everything away and start from scratch.”

He did, however, insist that there is space on the calendar for events in both Belgrade and Athens.

It remains to be seen if tennis will return to Belgrade before Djokovic retires from the sport.
