Joao Fonseca is realising a dream this week as he plays in the Laver Cup, a tournament created by Roger Federer.
Federer is Fonseca’s idol, with the Brazilian having grown up wanting to play tennis like the legendary Swiss star.
Fonseca will now follow in the footsteps of his ATP hero at the Laver Cup, as he prepares to play in the iconic event for the first time.
He will, however, represent Team World, with Federer having played for Team Europe during his glittering career.
And ahead of the tournament getting underway in Spain, the two were able to cross paths, much to the delight of Fonseca.

What Roger Federer said to Joao Fonseca in their first meeting
As per the Laver Cup on Instagram, the youngster was nervous ahead of their meeting, with Fonseca saying: “My hands are sweating because I’m going to meet Roger.”

The veteran then emerged, saying to the rising star as they shared a hug: “Finally, nice to meet you. It’s a pleasure. Congratulations on everything so far. Well done on a great career.”
Joao Fonseca sends message to Roger Federer at the Laver Cup
Fonseca was quick to message his idol after their meeting in San Francisco, host of the next edition of the Laver Cup.
He shared images of their catch-up on Instagram with the words: “It was a pleasure to finally meet you, Roger Federer.”
Perhaps unsurprisingly there was envy among his followers, with his fellow professional Lorenzo Musetti commenting: “Pretty jealous I am.”
It will have been a fantastic moment for the 19-year-old, who will have gained a lot from his discussion with Federer.
And just like the Swiss icon said, the Brazilian has enjoyed a great career so far, which includes one ATP title that arrived in Buenos Aires.
| Roger Federer | Joao Fonseca | |
| 1 | Career-high rank | 42 |
| 103 | ATP titles | 1 |
| 1251 – 275 | Win-loss | 31 – 22 |

The teenager has also managed to rise to 42 in the world rankings, and now has the chance to help fire Team World to Laver Cup glory.
That would ironically likely upset Federer, who helped fire Team Europe to three victories from his four appearances in the competition.
