Laura Robson was quick to point out what she noticed Lorenzo Musetti did mid-way through his loss to Carlos Alcaraz, which she felt might have spurred him on to victory.

Frustration is a natural part of sport, especially when the stakes are this high.

After all, with so much money and glory on the line, alongside the overwhelming physical demands of tennis, it’s only natural to get angry when a result isn’t going your way.

However, players in this field are always encouraged to at least attempt to shield their emotions, given the mental battle that also plays out on court.

Not only are the two athletes in question seeking to outlast one another with physicality and skill, but they are also seeking any internal advantage too.

Robson, speaking live on Sky Sports last night, thinks Lorenzo Musetti afforded Carlos Alcaraz just that during their match, which you simply cannot do against a player of such ruthless quality.

Laura Robson spotted Lorenzo Musetti’s frustrated mid-match reaction

Discussing the incident, which occurred just as the Spaniard appeared to take charge in the match, the pundit admitted, ‘that’s never a good sign’ as she reviewed the moment.

Musetti, clearly frustrated as the contest seemed to be slipping away from him, struck his racket against his own legs.

Robson felt this was not the wisest move considering who stood across from him on the other side of the court, and naturally, Alcaraz capitalised: “Yeah, oh, no, that’s never a good sign, but especially given that no one would have noticed that faster than Alcaraz, and all of a sudden you saw him sort of start to unleash on his game.

“Still a couple of unforced errors, but really it was the winner count that was racking up on his side of the court, and as Tim mentioned in the commentary, he was so dialled in from the first point of the match, you just knew, he had that number one spot on his mind and sometimes we see these dips in concentration, especially when the match feels quite straightforward. There was none of that today.

“It was like every 30-30 point you saw him look to his box, really reset and focus before either serving or same with deuce points, yeah, he just had another level when it mattered most.”

Speaking after the match, Musetti did admit he was surprised by Alcaraz in one key area that likely led to his downfall.

Lorenzo Musetti needs to fix worrying trend in 2026

Musetti has enjoyed an impressive year despite his exit at the ATP Finals, of which he only qualified for because of Novak Djokovic’s eleventh-hour withdrawal.

However, he still gave a good account of himself and even earned a monumental, battling win over Alex de Minaur to depart Turin with some good memories.

Despite this relative success, yesterday’s loss to Alcaraz marked a worrying trend for the Italian that will surely prevent him from stepping up and truly challenging for the sport’s greatest honours.

Do you think Carlos Alcaraz will win the ATP Finals?

In all honesty, it’s an issue that is currently plaguing every player on the ATP Tour: beating Alcaraz and Sinner.

However, Musetti perhaps suffers more than most against the top-two-ranked players in the world, having recorded just a single win against the duo across 11 matches.

And, to make matters even worse, his last and only win against either of them came against Alcaraz back in 2022, scraping past the 19-year-old in the Hamburg final.

This is a worrying trend that he will be keen to fix in 2026, with a losing streak that he needs to snap sooner rather than later.

Musetti is among the chasing pack who will be desperate to make the step up and challenge for elite honours alongside this legendary pair. Starting to pick up some victories directly against them will go a long way towards achieving that goal.
