There have been many reasons given for why Juan Carlos Ferrero and Carlos Alcaraz split earlier this week.

However, neither party has emerged to confirm the various rumours spreading like wildfire.

Everyone has their own theory, and some outlets have sought to offer insider scoops on arguably the biggest tennis story of the year.

In an effort to cut through the swathes of misreporting, one newspaper based in Carlos Alcaraz’s home town of Murcia seems to have finally reached a conclusion.

What Juan Carlos Ferrero did that shocked Carlos Alcaraz’s team

As one of many claims written in La Verdad’s latest issue, they singled out Ferrero’s conduct during and after last month’s Paris Masters as another contentious issue that brought this relationship nearer to its end.

Having already seen fractures emerge due to the coach’s frequent absences, most notably in Cincinnati earlier this year, questions were already being asked about his commitment.

However, the way in which he supposedly sped off from the French capital straight after Alcaraz’s shock first-round exit to Cameron Norrie left the player and the rest of his team ‘shocked’.

Ferrero’s absences during their time working together were also branded a ‘tremendous anomaly’, with Alcaraz’s father taking particular issue with this perceived lack of dedication.

This marked yet another of many reasons why Ferrero and Alcaraz split earlier this week.

What tournaments has Juan Carlos Ferrero missed over the years?

Ironically, Alcaraz’s maiden Masters 1000 title in Miami actually came with Ferrero absent.

Instead, his new main coach, Samu Lopez, was in his box, which could be a sign that not all is lost despite the departure of his long-term coach.

However, the 45-year-old did make an emotional appearance at the final, having missed the event due to the death of his father.

Ferrero also missed the 2023 Queen’s Championships, which Alcaraz also won, as well as last year’s 2024 Australian Open.

2025 has been littered with far more absences from the coach though, missing the Qatar Open, Monte Carlo and Cincinnati Masters and the Japan Open.

Ironically, Alcaraz boasts a 33-2 record when Ferrero is not in his box.
