Four American women have made history at the Australian Open this year by reaching the quarterfinals.
This was led by 18-year-old Iva Jovic, who set up a quarterfinal with Aryna Sabalenka after thrashing Yulia Putintseva to continue her best ever Grand Slam run.
While Jovic is into the last eight of a major tournament for the first time, it’s Coco Gauff’s 10th time in a Grand Slam quarterfinal.
Gauff and Jovic are in the same half of the draw, while the other half sees an all-American quarterfinal between Jessica Pegula and Amanda Anisimova.
This is now the first time that four American women have reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open since 2001.

What happened at the 2001 Australian Open?
It is the first time in 25 years since four American women have reached the Australian Open quarterfinals, which last occurred at the 2001 tournament.
This year saw Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Lindsay Davenport and Jennifer Capriati all reach the last-eight in Melbourne.
Three of the four American women would go on to reach the semifinals, with only Serena missing out after losing to top seed Martina Hingis.
It was then Venus’ turn to fall victim to three-time Australian Open champion Hingis, who appeared to be the favorite after reaching the final.
Especially as she would play Capriati, who was into her first Grand Slam final after beating defending champion Davenport.
Hingis had won both of their previous meetings coming into this match, but this time it was Capriati’s turn to beat the Swiss to claim her first major title.
Capriati would defend her Australian Open title a year later, but there have not been four American women in the quarterfinals of the tournament since 2001 until 25 years later.

When did four American women last reach the quarterfinals of any Grand Slam?
While it has been 25 years since the last time four American women have reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, it has been a shorter period since they have reached the last-eight of any major.
This came at the 2017 US Open, which was a very dominant tournament for American women.
Which American man and woman do you think will go furthest at the Australian Open?
Despite none of the top eight seeds being American, Venus Williams, Madison Keys, CoCo Vandeweghe and Sloane Stephens all reached the quarterfinals in New York.
An American champion was then confirmed after all four of these players made it into the semifinals.
This resulted in a final between Keys and Stephens, who were both into their first Grand Slam final at the US Open.
Stephens won the US Open in a historic tournament for American women’s tennis, which has not been repeated until nine years later in 2026.
