What Daniil Medvedev predicted about Jannik Sinner after losing the Australian Open final to him last year which has come true

Jannik Sinner recently won his second consecutive Australian Open title with a win over Alexander Zverev.

For the second time in two years, the Italian is champion at the Australian Open, having dominated at Melbourne Park.

Sinner beat Zverev in the 2025 final, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3, as he took home the title having dropped just two sets all tournament.

The 23-year-old had a far tougher time of things in last year’s final, however, as Sinner beat Daniil Medvedev in five sets, having trailed 2-0.

Sinner won his first Major title having entered the tournament as the fourth seed, taking down ten-time champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals.

He had truly announced himself on the ATP Tour, and Medvedev made a big prediction about Sinner after the match.

During his press conference after last year’s final, Medvedev was asked whether he thought Sinner was the best player in the world.

“He continues playing like this, continues winning tournaments like this, he’s going to be number one in the world at one moment,” he said.

“If he stays healthy and plays like he played this tournament, one moment he’s going to be number one, two months, in one year, in two years, one moment.”

Medvedev did, however, admit that tennis is an unpredictable sport, and that anything can happen.

“This tournament he was the best player in the world, and that’s why he won this slam, but we never know what happens next,” he said.

“Many players went through different moments in their seasons and careers, so let’s see how Jannik [Sinner] handles everything that is going to happen.”

The 2021 US Open champion also described how Sinner had improved in Melbourne last year.

“Yeah, he hits strong, I would think he’s top three, top five, on tour maybe top one, because he hits very strong,” said Medvedev.

“Before he was missing a little bit, because it’s tough to hit strong, you can miss.

“Now he doesn’t miss much, and that’s why he has a Grand Slam and why he has a lot of titles and why he’s winning a lot of matches.”

Medvedev noted that he would’ve liked Sinner to miss a few more times during the final, as he lost 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 3-6.

“I personally hope that next time I play him he’s going to miss like he did a little in the first two sets and then last three sets he barely missed,” he said.

“Last game, I’m, like, who knows, maybe he can get tight, I went a little bit back, I tried my final shot, match point, forehand down the line, probably 160 kilometers an hour, and the match is over.”

It wasn’t too long ago that Medvedev had a dominant lead over Sinner in their head-to-head, winning their first six meetings on the ATP Tour.

Since then, the Italian has taken control, only losing once to Medvedev in their last nine matches.

Medvedev beat Sinner in a five-set classic at Wimbledon last year, securing a rare victory over the Italian.

Momentum swung back and forth in a thrilling encounter before the Russian eventually secured the win after four hours of action.

Unfortunately for Medvedev, form quickly resumed, as he lost his next three encounters with Sinner, and now trails him 7-8 in their head-to-head.

It remains to be seen if the 28-year-old can get back to winning ways against the now three-time Major champion but will have to wait to do so following Sinner’s withdrawal from Rotterdam, where Medvedev is set to compete next.

The Rotterdam Open featuring Medvedev will begin on February 3.
