Andrey Rublev has continued his struggles after losing in the first round of the Vienna Open.

Rublev hired Marat Safin as his coach earlier this year after struggling for form, which has seen some improvement.

This includes the most recent Grand Slam tournament, with Rublev reaching the fourth round of the US Open.

However, Rublev has not won a match since the US Open, and this means that something has now happened to him for the first time since 2019.

Rublev was beaten in the first round of the Vienna Open by Cameron Norrie, 6-2 6(5)-7 6-2, which is his fifth consecutive defeat.

This has been a disappointing run for Rublev and his latest loss has confirmed something has happened to him for the first time since 2019.

Despite being an outside chance, Rublev still had an opportunity to qualify for the ATP Finals, something he had done every year between 2020 and 2024.

After losing to Norrie, Rublev’s chances of qualifying for the year-end tournament were made even slimmer, and after Lorenzo Musetti reached the semifinals in the Austrian capital they have now officially come to an end.

Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev are the only players to confirm their qualification to the ATP Finals this year, with four places still up for grabs.

While losing five matches in a row is not a common thing to happen for a player like Rublev, the same thing happened to the Russian earlier this year after he lost the first two matches of the season following three consecutive defeats at the end of 2024.

It has been a mixed year for Rublev, who won the Qatar Open earlier this year, which was his 17th career title.

However, Rublev has lost 24 of his 56 matches this season, and has his lowest win-loss record since 2018, when he was just 20 years old.

There are also some concerning statistics about the rankings of the players Rublev is losing to, with the average rank of the players he has lost to in 2025 at 51, which includes three defeats to players ranked outside the top 100.

Rublev now only has one ATP tournament left this year at the Paris Masters, where he actually has a negative win-loss record despite reaching the semifinals in 2023.

The 28-year-old will be hoping to bring an end to his losing streak in the French capital and end his season on a high.
