Venus Williams was right to call out Indian Wells for ‘extremely unfair’ treatment

Venus Williams became frustrated when she couldn’t get her hands on a cold bottle of water during her first-round match at Indian Wells.

After asking several times, Williams lost her cool.

“Hey, if I can’t get the water, I’m calling the referee. [Inaudible] said it would take two secs to get cold water. It is extremely unfair! No, it’s not okay! It’s not okay! Give the water!” she said.

Who will win Indian Wells in 2026?

Vote now!

It might seem like an overreaction, but Williams was completely within her rights to call out those responsible.

If Indian Wells were happy to give Venus Williams a wild card they should have met her demands

Williams was the first wild card announced for Indian Wells.

The tournament organisers clearly had faith in Williams, but didn’t show her the respect she deserved during her first-round match.

Williams asked for a cold bottle of water on several occasions, but her very simple request fell on deaf ears.

The conditions were already tough enough, as both players, Williams and Diane Parry, battled in the wind.

She wasn’t asking for preferential treatment or complaining about a decision; she was asking for water.

If Indian Wells aren’t bothered, or competent enough to fulfill that request, then they’re in real trouble!

Still competing on tour at 45, Williams remains a fan favorite, but facing an opponent 22 years younger than her, she cannot afford to have stuff like this go against her.

Williams’ outburst came at the conclusion of the second set, which she won 7-6 [7-4] to force a decider.

Unable to complete the comeback, Williams lost to Parry in three sets, 3-6, 7-6, 1-6.

It would be a stretch to say ‘water bottle-gate’ cost Williams the third set and the match, but it certainly didn’t help…

Indian Wells’ ‘Masters 1000 tournament of the year award’ chances take a hit

From 2014 to 2024, Indian Wells won the ‘Masters 1000 tournament of the year award’.

But in 2025, the Cincinnati Open took the title away from Indian Wells.

Tournament director Tommy Haas didn’t seem too worried about losing the award when asked recently.

“I think it’s a nice thing for them, and rightfully so. I wasn’t there myself to see it, but did hear a lot about it, and, you know, it gives us the initiative to, you know, maybe try to raise the bar again ourselves as well, as we always do, and yeah, it’s good to have that competition out there, that’s for sure,” he said.

If so, which tournament would it be?

Incidents like this make it less likely that Indian Wells will reclaim the title from Cincinnati.

Treating Williams ‘extremely unfairly’ is a bad look for the event.

Haas will hope that no other incidents occur at this year’s tournament, which could hurt Indian Wells’ chances of winning the award.

Venus Williams’ wild card case is getting harder to make

Williams hasn’t won a match this year.

In fact, she’s only won one singles match since her comeback in Washington last July.

Venus Williams’ losing streak

Williams has lost her last eight singles matches.

It would be unfair to suggest she’s ‘wasted’ eight wild cards, as the former world number one has looked competitive more often than not.

Her three-set defeats to Karolina Muchova and Olga Danilovic at the US Open and Australian Open, in particular, were timely reminders of what Williams is capable of.

But if she continues to lose matches, the wild cards will dry up.

She may be given a wild card to play Miami later this month, but looking ahead to the clay-court season, Williams might struggle.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Williams…

The 2026 Miami Open begins on Tuesday, March 17.
