Venus Williams is set to make her return to professional tennis at the Washington Open, where she’ll face American compatriot Peyton Stearns in the first round.
Williams‘ last professional match came in March 2024, when she featured in both legs of the ‘sunshine double’.
The seven-time Grand Slam champion played at the Indian Wells Open and the Miami Open, losing in the opening round of both.
Now, at 45 years of age, Williams has been granted a wildcard to play in the D.C. tournament, which she has never won before.
Ahead of her much-anticipated comeback, the legend set a reminder for the rest of the WTA Tour.

Speaking to the media in her pre-tournament press conference, Williams said: “I always felt a big responsibility towards promoting tennis and promoting women’s sports.
“I think that this generation can’t forget that. That women, we still have lots to fight for. An example to set. It’s so important.
“Of course, I am in love with tennis. So, to have the opportunity to have this platform to promote the game even now is a great opportunity.
“I think when I go out there, I will definitely be trying to focus on me and not focusing on playing for the fans.
“I think in places like this, it’s probably the only places where I feel that way, so I will try and definitely keep the focus on me and what I am doing, but I know I will love playing here.
“The last time I played here too, it was such a great feeling.”
Venus Williams’ last appearance at the Washington Open
The last time Williams featured at the Washington Open was in 2022, when she came to D.C. fresh off her mixed doubles campaign at Wimbledon with Jamie Murray.
She played her first match against Rebecca Marino, and despite taking the first set, was ultimately beaten by the Canadian.
Since then, Williams hasn’t played in the US capital and has sporadically appeared at events on the tour.
Her last Grand Slam campaign was at the US Open in 2023, where she lost in the first round.
