Two-time Grand Slam champion confirms she is ‘getting closer’ to making her return to tennis as she shares training update

Jannik Sinner successfully defended his Australian Open title, but a new Grand Slam champion was crowned last month.

Sinner has just accepted a three-month ban from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), which came into play shortly after his Melbourne success.

The world number one beat Alexander Zverev for his third Grand Slam title overall, while Madison Keys beat Aryna Sabalenka to win her first.

Keys has risen to sixth in the WTA rankings following her Australian Open title, with the American having lost the 2017 US Open final.

Both Keys and Sinner will be looking for further success at the French Open, which is the next Grand Slam in the 2025 calendar.

Petra Kvitova ‘getting closer’ to return after 15 months away

But the Italian will miss out on plenty of action between now and then, with Sinner banned for the likes of Indian Wells and Miami.

Taking part in both of those, however, is two-time Grand Slam champion Petra Kvitova, along with taking on Austin.

Kvitova is returning after a 15-month break, with the former world number two now providing an update on her preparations.

Sharing images on court on Instagram, she wrote: “Training, hard work, and humility. My return to tournaments is getting closer, and I’m enjoying every moment on the court to the fullest.”

Like Keys and Sinner, Kvitova knows what it takes to win on the biggest stage, having lifted the trophy at Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014.

A return to Grand Slam tennis may be a while away, but the Czech star will be looking to start strongly at the ATX Open later this month.

The tournament is a WTA 250 event, with Indian Wells and the Miami Open both WTA 1000 events, and both taking place next month.

Before that, however, there is another WTA 1000 event in Dubai, with the Qatar Open having just taken place.

Amanda Anisimova just won her very first WTA 1000 title in Doha, beating Jelena Ostapenko 6-4, 6-3 in the final.

Kvitova meanwhile boasts a stunning 31 tour-level titles throughout her career so far, with plenty more success on the cards for the 34-year-old.
