After speculation of a return to Grand Slam singles action, Nick Kyrgios ruled himself out of the Australian Open.

The former Wimbledon finalist took to social media to announce that he wants to focus solely on doubles this year at Melbourne Park.

Kyrgios said on Instagram: “After some good conversations with (Tennis Australia), I’ve made the call to focus on doubles at this year’s AO (Australian Open).

“I’m fit and back on court, but five-setters are a different beast and I’m not quite ready to go the distance yet.

“This tournament means everything to me, but I’d rather give my spot to someone who’s ready to make their moment count.

“It’s all building blocks, and I’ll be back next year and pumped to compete.”

With Kyrgios out, two of his compatriots have now received wildcard entries into this year’s Australian Open men’s singles draw.

The two stars, as well as 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka, were given the last three spots.

Thompson, a former world number 26, played a limited schedule in the second half of the 2025 season as he struggled with injuries.

Despite making 12 appearances at the Australian Open, Thompson has never made it past the second round.

O’Connell, on the other hand, recorded his best finish in Melbourne during the 2022 season, when he made the third round.

Jordan Thompson said he is ‘super grateful’ for the wildcard

As per Tennis Australia, Thompson said: “I’m super grateful for the wildcard into my home Slam and looking forward to playing in front of my favourite crowd.”

O’Connell, who has also dealt with setbacks in his fitness, said: “After struggling with injuries toward the end of last year and having to cut my season short, I’m now feeling fit and healthy.

“I’m extremely grateful to Tennis Australia for the opportunity to compete in the main draw.

“I’ve made some incredible memories at the Australian Open and am thankful for the chance to be part of it again.”

The Australian Open main draw begins on the 18th of January, with the opening ceremony taking place on the 17th.
