Tracy Austin broke down what impressed her about Emma Raducanu’s performance to reach the Wimbledon third round.

The British player produced arguably the best tennis match since winning the US Open when she thrashed Elise Mertens for the loss of just three games.

There was no stopping the 21-year-old who left the Belgian player bamboozled by her brilliance on Court One.

The home crowd thoroughly enjoyed the near flawless display from Raducanu, who is back in the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time since her stunning triumph at Flushing Meadows in 2021.

Raducanu is full of confidence after claiming two victories at Wimbledon. She claimed what she described as an ‘ugly’ win over lucky loser Renata Zarazúa in round one, before dominating Mertens on Wednesday.

Austin, a two-time semi-finalist at the All-England Club, assessed what she enjoyed most about the former British number one’s performance.

“It really is nice to see her play instinctive tennis again. The backhand is always so incredibly beautiful technically, but the forehand was sound today and that was really what made the difference,” the American told BBC.

“She broke down Mertens’ forehand and Emma was hitting deep, she was hitting close to the sidelines and returning extremely well, everything was going her way. You can really start to see that Emma’s striking the ball similarly to the way that she did at the US Open.”

Who is Emma Raducanu’s next Wimbledon opponent?

Raducanu’s emphatic round two win put her into the third round where she will play ninth seed Maria Sakkari.

The Greek player defeated Arantxa Rus to reach the next round and she will face the Bromley local for the first time since their meeting at the 2021 US Open.

The pair clashed in the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows where both players were aiming to reach their first major final.

Raducanu continued her dominant run with a 6-1, 6-4 win, and went on to defeat Leylah Fernandez in the final to become the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam.
