It’s been a pretty difficult 2025 for Paula Badosa, and she will be hoping for a change in fortunes next year.

The year started in style with a run to the semifinal of the Australian Open, where she eventually lost to Aryna Sabalenka.

Since then, however, injuries have started to take a toll on Badosa, with a third-round exit at the French Open and a first-round departure at Wimbledon highlighting those struggles.

Badosa announced before the Asian swing that she was good to go, but on Sunday, she was forced to retire when trailing 4-2 to Karolina Muchova at the China Open.

Paula Badosa decides to end 2025

For the Spanish performer, the curtain has now come down on 2025, and she will work to come back when the tour gets back underway in 2026.

Badosa won’t look back on this year with too much fondness, and after making the tough decision to curtail 2025, she’s posted a heartfelt message on Instagram.

She said: “There are tough times when I ask myself how I manage to keep going through the toughest, most painful moments. And the truth is, it’s in those exact moments that I discover the deepest strength inside me. Every setback hurts, but it also reminds me how badly I want to fight, how much I want to come back stronger.

“I wouldn’t be able to do this without the people who continue to believe in me. Your support carries me when things get heavy, and your faith gives me courage when doubt creeps in. There is truly no greater feeling than walking onto a tennis court and seeing you all there, standing behind me. That energy, that love. It’s something that I can never thank you enough for.

“No matter how many obstacles come my way, I promise you this: I will keep fighting, I will keep pushing, and I will keep finding my way back. See you all in 2026.”

Badosa has just made the right decision

At this point in the year, Badosa has absolutely nothing to gain by trying to come back to action and she’s made the right call here.

At 27-years-old, Badosa has some time on her side to get over the line and win a Grand Slam title and that will be the aim next season.

Badosa has found this year tough with injuries, and ultimately, it’s important that she resets not only in a physical sense but also mentally.

This decision feels like a solid one from a professional point of view and having been the world number two in the past, Badosa will be hoping to improve her current ranking of number 18 when she returns to the WTA Tour in January.
