An ATP player referenced himself when commenting on Carlos Alcaraz breaking his racket at the Cincinnati Open.

The Spaniard’s frustrations boiled over during his opening match of the tournament against Gael Monfils.

In a rain-affected match that lasted over two days, the 21-year-old squandered a lead to lose 6-4, 6-7(5), 4-6 to the French veteran.

This means Carlos Alcaraz will enter the upcoming US Open with consecutive defeats after losing the Olympic final to Novak Djokovic.

There has been plenty of reaction to Alcaraz’s unexpected racket smash from those in the tennis world.

One of those to share their thoughts on the matter is French player Corentin Moutet, who is ranked number 71 in the world.

A video of the incident was uploaded to Tennis TV and the commentator said Alcaraz “desperately wants to win this match.”

Claiming the reaction to certain players breaking a racket is different from others, Moutet then wrote: “When I do it I’ve got a mental issue,” alongside a laughing emoji.

He added: “I don’t judge Carlos here of course. He is a legend already and he behaves amazingly. I’m making fun of how the reaction of the commentator can be different on the same gesture.”

His tweet received a response from Nick Kyrgios, who has had multiple instances of releasing his frustrations on court. “Haha what about when I do it? Hahahahahaaha,” the Australian replied.

Carlos Alcaraz suffers successive defeats at the Cincinnati Open

Alcaraz entered the Cincinnati Open as the favourite for the title after claiming the French Open, Wimbledon and Olympic silver medal this summer.

But in his first hard court match since the Miami Open in March, Alcaraz suffered perhaps his most surprising defeat of the season so far.

The three-set contest marked the first time Alcaraz has lost to Monfils, who claimed the ninth top three win of his career.

Post-match a disappointed Alcaraz said: “It’s kind of really difficult to find some good stuff from this match. So I want to forget it, and try to move on to New York.

“I’ll go to New York and I’ll try to practise well, to get used to those courts. And I will forget this match, because I think it is impossible to get any good things about this match.”
