Tommy Paul gives his verdict on the condition of the courts at the French Open after winning his first round match

Tommy Paul survived a scare to reach the second round of the French Open, where he takes on Marton Fucsovics.

Paul is the 12th seed at the French Open, and was drawn to face Danish youngster Elmer Moller in round one in Paris.

And the American was forced to fight hard in his first match of the second Grand Slam of 2025, which he came from behind to win 6-7(5-7), 6-2, 6-3, 6-1.

Paul has been backed to reach the French Open semi-finals, a stage that represents his best-ever Grand Slam finish.

He reached that stage of the 2023 Australian Open, having only ever made it to the third round at Roland Garros.

That finish arrived last year, but the ATP number 12 is happy with his brief time at the French Open so far this year.

Speaking of the conditions in the French capital, Paul told Tennis Channel: “I think the courts are a lot faster.

“Obviously today it’s a little different because it’s colder and raining and windy. A lot of conditions to deal with but for the most part I think firmer court, a little faster when it’s not raining.

“I like it. For me being able to get my backhand through the court and load into forehands is a big part of my game and I like to serve and volley a little bit.”

Paul entered the French Open with a 21-8 win-loss record in 2025, and on the back of a strong run at the Italian Open.

The American was hugely impressive as he reached the semi-finals in Rome earlier this month, before falling to Jannik Sinner.

Paul knocked out the likes of seeded players Alex de Minaur, Tomas Machac and Hubert Hurkacz before his loss to the world number one.

Such a run has undoubtedly played a role in his high spirits in Paris, along with his junior title win there in 2015.

Paul defeated fellow American Taylor Fritz a decade ago, and said of the title: “I tell Fritz every time I come back here!

“The court has gone though, I can’t believe it. The court I played the finals on but I remind him. The same at the US Open, he reminds me.

“It was cool playing with that group in junior slams and obviously this is a pretty special place to me for that reason.

“Obviously I want to do well in the pro tour also and I am feeling pretty good this year, so hopefully we can get things rolling.”
