Emma Raducanu is one of tennis’ most polarising figures, seemingly always under siege from fans of the sport.
One of the easiest criticisms that people level at her regards her coaching decisions, having operated with immense ruthlessness in the years that followed her US Open title in 2021.
Most suggest that such constant upheaval has not helped her progression, whilst others, who are in the minority, praise her for not putting up with anyone who she feels doesn’t fit her style.
Tim Henman is the latest to offer his verdict on Emma Raducanu‘s coaching strategy over the years, commenting on the decision to have seemingly now settled with Andrew Richardson by her side.
Tim Henman discusses Emma Raducanu’s coaching decision-making
Speaking to The Guardian, he began by reviewing the decision to move on from Richardson after that US Open win.
“I was surprised she chose not to work with him,” Henman began. “She’s worked with a lot of coaches since then and now I really hope that her decision to get back with Andrew works for both their sakes.
Do you agree with Emma Raducanu’s thoughts on the WTA schedule?
“He’s one of my best friends and I’ve also been around Emma. So it would be good if results improve.”
Then, referencing her penchant for hiring and firing coaches at will in the years that followed, Henman added: “Emma’s had eight or nine coaches, but it’s her prerogative. I looked for consistency, continuity and building the relationship – and that’s why I had three coaches in 16 years.”
She does now seem settled, ever since Raducanu re-hired Richardson earlier this year. The hope is that this can be the start of a long and prosperous partnership, with the two having already reached another final together.
Emma Raducanu’s Grand Slam title chances rated
In that same interview, Henman also gave his honest verdict on Raducanu’s chances of ever winning another major title.
After all, it has been some time since that magical 2021 triumph, and she has not looked likely since.
That being said, the British pundit tried to remain positive.
Will Emma Raducanu ever win another Grand Slam title?
He argued: “It would be very hard.
“Not many people win slams so you could say, if you’ve done it once, you can do it again. But it’s all about the process. She’s got to become physically more resilient to build up her schedule, her match count, her weight of shot, her speed of movement and durability.”
Raducanu’s best-ever run at a Grand Slam, aside from when she won the title, remains two fourth-round appearances at Wimbledon.
