Jannik Sinner has continued his formidable form at the Australian Open, where he is into the second round.

Sinner led Hugo Gaston 6-2, 6-1 in the first round of the Australian Open when the Frenchman retired due to illness.

Gaston received a heartfelt message from Sinner after his retirement, which arrived after just 67 minutes in Melbourne.

Rod Laver Arena played host to the Australian Open clash, which is the same venue for Sinner’s second round tie with James Duckworth.

Ahead of the match, the Italian superstar has received high praise from former British number one Tim Henman.

He told TNT Sports: “I think Sinner’s been very open about how he wants to bring different variations to his game.

“He knows where his bread and butter is – that’s to serve the forehand and backhand, just blasting cross-court down the line.

“But now, when you see him playing with great touch, his technique looks more and more comfortable at the net, and it’s scary that he’s got those options to go to if he needs them.”

Despite a seemingly straightforward and brief opening victory over Gaston, Sinner wants to improve his serve.

And that is also despite the world number two currently leading the way in that key category on the ATP Tour.

But Sinner is admirably still trying to become an even better player than he already is, having already claimed four Grand Slam titles.

He now has an intriguing clash with Australian Duckworth, namely because he should receive plenty of support from the home fans.

But perhaps more importantly, he’s managed to beat Sinner before, winning their round of 32 ATP Masters 1000 Canada tie in 2021.

That did, however, arrive in between two defeats against the Italian, who is a very strong favorite to take their head-to-head record to 3-1 in Melbourne.
