The Miami Open is currently in full swing with several top tennis stars gunning for glory. The round of 32 stage is currently upon us and it remains to be seen who will claim the title.

Casper Ruud is one of the players bidding to get his hands on the silverware. He came into the tournament looking to kick-start his 2024, with the Norwegian only making the third round at the Australian Open in January.

There have been some improvements since then. He lost to Alex de Minaur in the final of the Mexican Open and lost out to Tommy Paul in the quarter-final of Indian Wells.

Despite Andy Murray waxing lyrical about the Miami Open after his stunning win over Tomas-Martin Etcheverry, It would appear that some players aren’t quite so satisfied.

Ruud has been left absolutely furious with something that happened at the tournament. During his win over Luca Van Assche last night, he vented his frustration at the umpire out on the court.

Well, the rank that he had clearly had the desired impact on his performance. He won 7-6, 1-6, 6-1 and it would appear that he just needed to get some things off of his chest.

Ruud has been unhappy with the facilities behind the scenes in Miami. His rant which was heard at a change of ends suggested that the Norwegian wanted the umpire to feed his fears back to the ATP.

He was overheard saying: “There’s been no towels, no cold water, just a plastic chair to change. This is a joke. And you know why it is? Because the whole tournament is too cheap to put up something good for the players.

“Go to the trailer for five minutes in a room with nothing and just a plastic chair to change. Maybe they can put some towels, maybe some cold water for the players’ comfort. And it’s not your fault, I’m just saying how bad it is.”

Ruud did manage to come through his match. Clearly, the conditions and how poorly he played in the second set led to this rant. Now, it will be fascinating to see what comes next from the Scandinavian.

Ruud will want to keep progressing in Miami

Perhaps the man who reached the French Open final in 2022 and 2023, and the US Open final in 2022 can use the standard of the facilities in Miami as a motivation to get the tournament won.

The 25-year-old has 10 career titles to his name. This week he will be trying desperately to reach the latter stages of this one – even if he’s not happy with everything on offer.

In fairness, we think he does perhaps have a point. The temperatures are edging closer to 30 degrees this week in Miami. To not provide some water for the players is a bit of an unforced error.

Ruud will need to park his frustrations with the tournament committee. He has a match to look forward to this evening against Spanish 27th seed Alejandro Davidovivh Fokina – and it’s one that he should come through.
