Since the retirement of Serena Williams in 2022, American women’s tennis has shown no signs of dropping in standard.

As of today, 18 WTA players from the US are ranked within the top 100, with four holding spots in the world’s top ten.

In 2025, the first two Grand Slams of the year have been won by compatriots Madison Keys and Coco Gauff.

Keys won a maiden major crown at the Australian Open in January, while Gauff won her first Roland Garros title in early June.

With Wimbledon and the US Open still to go, a 23-year-long wait for an incredible feat could be over in September.

The feat American women could close in on at Wimbledon

The last time each Grand Slam in a calendar year was won by an American was in 2002, when Jennifer Capriati won the Australian Open, before Williams took the next three majors that season.

Since then, the year it has come closest to happening was in 2016, when Williams won the first three Grand Slam titles, but the US Open was ultimately clinched by Italy’s Flavia Pennetta.

With Keys and Gauff triumphant in Melbourne and Paris so far this year, the chance to complete the feat for the first time in 23 years has presented itself.

En route to a calendar Grand Slam for the US, Wimbledon will be the hardest of the remaining two majors to capture, with the lack of grass-court specialists from the country.

Emma Navarro came the closest out of her fellow Americans to winning at the All England Club last year, making it to the quarter-finals, but was defeated by Jasmine Paolini in straight sets.

Keys is former Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick’s favourite this year, after being inches away from making the last eight in 2024 before having to retire due to injury against Paolini.

Should an American win it all in SW19, there’s every chance history could be made again in front of a home crowd at the US Open.

What Andy Roddick said about Madison Keys’ chances at Wimbledon

Picking his favourite from the US to win Wimbledon this year, Roddick said on the Tennis Channel: “Draws aside, which believe it or not play a huge part in tournaments, I like Madi Keys from the American side.

“I think she’s my favourite, I think she’s well-versed, she’s had good results on the grass.

“She was heading towards a big result last year before she got hurt, I think against Paolini, I think she was up four one in the third, if I’m wrong it’s not by much.

“But also since then, she has won a slam, she’s going to be more comfortable in that scenario.”

Along with Keys and Gauff, there are eight seeded women’s players altogether from the US at Wimbledon this year.
