The WTA player Andy Roddick suggested could win a Grand Slam this year who never made it past the quarterfinals

Each Grand Slam on the WTA Tour this year was won by a different player.

Madison Keys clinched her first major title at the Australian Open in January, denying two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka a three-peat in Melbourne.

Sabalenka was beaten once again in a major championship match at Roland Garros, where she fell to Coco Gauff.

At Wimbledon, Iga Swiatek claimed her sixth Grand Slam title after dominating Amanda Anisimova in the final with a double bagel, becoming the first Pole in history to emerge victorious at the All England Club in singles.

Then, in September, Sabalenka finally added to her major tally by winning the US Open, handing Anisimova another near miss in a title bout.

There was one WTA star, however, who former ATP number one Andy Roddick suggested could have been among the title contenders this season, but only went as far as the quarterfinals.

Andy Roddick said Karolina Muchova could win a major in 2025

In an episode of the Served podcast at the end of 2024, Roddick was making his predictions for the 2025 season.

When asked which player then ranked outside of the top 20 has the best chance of winning a Grand Slam, the American responded: “Muchova.

“Karolina Muchova. She is an amazing player. The only thing separating her from the top five is health.

“She can bother everyone. I think she is on my top five list of people who could win a Slam next year.”

Unfortunately for Muchova, she has missed some tournaments due to injury in 2025, but was able to feature at all four Grand Slams.

The Czech star reached the second round at the Australian Open before suffering first-round exits at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Her best major result this year came at the US Open, where she made the last eight following a strong campaign, in which she defeated Venus Williams.

Muchova was ultimately knocked out by an in-form Naomi Osaka, losing to the four-time major champion in straight sets.

Karolina Muchova’s injury struggles in recent seasons

In 2024, Muchova withdrew from the Australian Open and underwent surgery on her wrist after struggling with injuries.

She returned to tour-level action at the Eastbourne Open that year and won a match there, but pulled out of the tournament due to stiffness in her wrist.

Muchova managed to stay relatively healthy after that, but retired due to injury at the 2024 Ningbo Open semifinals.

This season, she has played at 15 tournaments, and only retired mid-match once, which came in her round of 32 bout with Magdalena Frech at the Wuhan Open.
