The US Open has already crowned its first champions of 2025 in the new-look mixed doubles event.
For the 2025 tournament, organisers chose to revamp the US Open mixed doubles, shortening the competition to a two-day event.
Played during ‘fan week’, 16 teams, including some of the biggest singles stars on the ATP and WTA Tour, battled it out for the title.
Interestingly, it was the defending champions, Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, who emerged victorious, claiming the $1 million prize on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

For all the criticism levelled at the event before it began, fans were entertained throughout, as Coco Gauff’s former coach now suggests the change was a ‘massive win’ for the US Open.
Brad Gilbert says full crowds for US Open mixed doubles final day is a ‘massive win’ for the event
Reacting to the final of the US Open mixed doubles event on X, Gauff’s former coach, Brad Gilbert, weighed in with his thoughts.
“The fact that there’s a full crowd tonight is a massive win, kudos to the US Open on the new format,” he said.
For years, doubles players have played in front of sparse crowds and were treated as an afterthought, but perhaps now, the perception will change.
Those in attendance on Arthur Ashe Stadium were treated to some world-class doubles action on Wednesday evening and will no doubt be eager to return for the 2026 tournament.
Errani and Vavassori’s win over Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud in the final was thrilling from start to finish, as the Italian pair battled to victory, 6-3, 5-7, 10-6.
Impressed with Errani and Vavassori’s performances during the final day, Gilbert praised the now two-time US Open mixed doubles champions.
“[Andrea] Vavassori is absolutely a beast at the net, [Sara] Errani is very sneaky good at the net as well, they will be extremely difficult to beat,” he said.
Picking up the title, Vavassori and Errani made a statement in New York, flying the flag for their fellow doubles stars.
With the event deemed a success, it will certainly be interesting to see whether more ‘traditional’ doubles players are invited in 2026.
On the other hand, some may argue that the success of the event and the large crowds, as Gilbert mentioned, were thanks to the big-name singles stars competing.

In total, eight Grand Slam singles champions were in action at this year’s US Open mixed doubles tournament, an astonishing total.
The Grand Slam champions who played the 2025 US Open mixed doubles event
Of the 32 players competing, eight had previously won singles Grand Slam titles.
| Player | Grand Slam singles titles | 2025 US Open mixed doubles performance |
| Novak Djokovic | 24 | Lost in 1R |
| Venus Williams | 7 | Lost in 1R |
| Iga Swiatek | 6 | Lost in F |
| Carlos Alcaraz | 5 | Lost in 1R |
| Naomi Osaka | 4 | Lost in 1R |
| Daniil Medvedev | 1 | Lost in 2R |
| Emma Raducanu | 1 | Lost in 1R |
| Elena Rybakina | 1 | Lost in 1R |
However, in a surprising turn of events, just two of those six players won matches at the event: Daniil Medvedev and Swiatek.
The remaining former Slam champions exited in round one, including Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Naomi Osaka.

There is an argument to suggest that two of the semifinalist teams, Errani/Vavassori and Danielle Collins/Christian Harrison, were the lowest-profile teams in the draw.
To still bring in the crowds they did, again speaks to the success of the event, giving doubles the spotlight it deserves.
All eyes now look toward Melbourne and the Australian Open, as fans wonder whether the other Grand Slams will adopt the new mixed doubles format.
They may have to wait a few years, however, as tournament director Craig Tiley has suggested they won’t be making a change any time soon.
Whether Tiley will now change his mind, given the success of the event in New York, remains to be seen, but it will certainly be something to keep an eye on.
The 2026 Australian Open is scheduled to begin on Monday, January 12.
