Currently, there are a total of nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments on the professional men’s circuit.
The Masters series, created in 1990, features events in the second-highest tour-level category, sitting below Grand Slams.
Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, Madrid, Rome, Canada, Cincinnati, Shanghai and Paris make up the series of nine, though a new-look tournament in Saudi Arabia is set to be added to the calendar from 2028 onwards.

No Masters competition has ever been upgraded to a higher level, but in 2016, 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic suggested there are two that deserve more status.

Novak Djokovic’s comments about the Masters series in 2016
In his post-tournament press conference after winning the 2016 Indian Wells, Djokovic was asked if the tournament deserves a new level or category.
The Serb responded: “Well, look, you know, I have a tremendous respect for the history of tennis and for Grand Slams.
“Especially, we all know that Grand Slams are the most prominent tournaments we have, you know, in the history of our sport. That doesn’t take away the possibility to grow other events within the ATP world.
“So I think this tournament – and you mentioned Shanghai and maybe a couple others – are willing to step it up, you know, and willing to, you know, compete for the higher level and a new category of the tournaments.

“I don’t see a reason why we should not allow them to do that. It’s for the sake of players and sport. You know, everything is evolving in life, and our sport should, too.”
The tournament Nick Kyrgios said should be a fifth Grand Slam
Last year, former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios made his feelings clear on which tournament is best suited to becoming a fifth Grand Slam.
As per Tennis Channel, Kyrgios said of the Miami Open in 2025: “This should be the fifth slam. Let’s just put that to bed right now.”
The Miami Open is the second half of the so-called ‘Sunshine Double’, taking place after Indian Wells every year.
It is one of the biggest events in tennis, having recorded a total of 386,000 attendees in 2023.
