The 2025 Masters 1000 season successfully transitioned to clay courts with a thrilling event in Monte-Carlo last week.

In the United States, Jack Draper and Jakub Mensik won the opening two Masters 1000 tournaments of the year in Indian Wells and at the Miami Open.

Traveling to Europe, Carlos Alcaraz won the Monte-Carlo Masters, beating Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in the final, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.

Events in Madrid and Rome will follow on the clay before hard-court tournaments in Canada, Cincinnati, Shanghai, and Paris wrap up the 2025 ATP Masters 1000 season.

None of the nine Masters 1000 tournaments are played on grass, as two big tennis names now explain why the surface isn’t used.

Jon Wertheim and Andy Roddick explain why there isn’t a grass court Masters 1000 event

Speaking on the Served with Andy Roddick podcast, Jon Wertheim gave his honest opinion on a potential grass-court Masters 1000 tournament.

“People always say why don’t we have more Masters 1000s on grass,” he said.

“There are a finite number of venues, Wimbledon being one of them that can give you the practice courts,  the locker-room facilities, the parking, the hospitality, there’s not a lot of grass venues that could live up to these prerequisites that you [need] to have a Masters.”

Former world number one Andy Roddick then shared his thoughts, citing Wimbledon as an example of why grass court events are so difficult to run.

“The other thing about having a Masters on grass, yes I wanted that forever. It should be the case,” said Roddick.

“The courts at the end of Wimbledon are trashed, the wear and tear of them, you can’t practice on them as a seeded player.

Roger Federer, the time he was going for his sixth win, could practice exactly 45 minutes a day on the outer courts of Wimbledon.

“You don’t get on stadium like you do at the other [Slams], it’s untenable on grass.”

What are the biggest grass court tournaments on the ATP Tour?

Wimbledon is by far the biggest grass tournament on the ATP calendar, but are there any other significant events on the surface?

In total, seven tournaments will be played on grass in 2025: (1 Grand Slam), (2 ATP 500), (4 ATP 250).

Over the years, some have questioned whether either Queen’s or Halle could be upgraded to a Masters 1000 tournament.

America’s Tommy Paul won Queens in 2024, beating Musetti in the final as he lifted the biggest trophy of his professional career.

Over in Germany, Jannik Sinner won the title in Halle, taking home his first-ever tournament victory on the grass.

Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz was no match for the world number one as he powered through in two tiebreakers to clinch the title.

It remains to be seen who will come out on top on the grass in 2025, but it will certainly be worth a watch.

The 2025 grass-court season will kick off with tournaments in Stuttgart and the Netherlands on June 9.
