Carlos Alcaraz will make his return to professional tennis at the Australian Open…
For the fourth consecutive year, Alcaraz has declined to join his Spanish teammates at the United Cup.
Instead, he will play an exhibition match against Jannik Sinner in South Korea, before heading over to Melbourne for the first Grand Slam of 2026.
Who will win the 2026 Australian Open?
Without him, Spain have struggled at the United Cup, and have only ever won one tie at the competition.
During Team Spain’s pre-tournament press conference, Jaume Munar, the Spanish number three, was asked what he thinks it will take to get Alcaraz to play the United Cup.
Jaume Munar thinks Carlos Alcaraz’s busy schedule prevents him from playing the United Cup
“I have no idea. This is a question for him,” said Munar.
“I suppose that he feels that he’s playing a lot, and he wants to be a little bit more at home.
“I don’t know what to say. This is the feeling I have.”
Alcaraz complained about the tennis schedule throughout 2025, but was often criticized for his comments due to his insistence on playing off-season exhibitions.

Munar knows that having Alcaraz in the team would boost Spain’s chances of winning the United Cup, but understands his decision and claims they have a good relationship.
Which country do you think will win the United Cup?
“I have a very good relationship with him. Of course, I can learn a lot of things with him,” he said.
“We’re talking about one of the best players in the world. Of course, he can do great.

“But I always said that I’ve been learning a lot from a lot of players, even not the top, top guys.
“During my career, I shared a lot of time with people who are not here anymore, like [Albert] Ramos-Vinolas, Bautista, and Carreno [Busta].
“I believe we have the luck in Spain that we’ve been producing top players all over years. We don’t have to look to the very top guys; we have a lot of people to learn from.”

Munar was then asked if he thinks he can one day overtake Alcaraz for the Spanish number one ranking.
“Take over Alcaraz? No chance,” he said.

It seems unlikely that Alcaraz will play the United Cup anytime soon, which is bad news for Spain, who fell to defeat in their opening match at the 2026 tournament.
Team Spain lost 3-0 to Argentina at the United Cup
Without Alcaraz, Spain fell to a humbling 3-0 defeat in their 2026 United Cup opener.

Spain’s chances of qualifying from the group stages look slim, although all hope isn’t lost.

They will play the title favorites, Team USA, on Monday, January 5.
The Americans are the most successful team in the history of the competition, winning two titles (2023, 2025).

Led by Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff, you wouldn’t want to bet against them defending their title in 2026.
That could, however, work to Spain’s advantage, as they will begin the match as big underdogs.
With all the pressure on Fritz and Gauff, perhaps Munar and Jessica Bouzas Maneiro can surprise them, and help send their country into the quarterfinals…
