Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic had arguably the greatest rivalry in the history of tennis.

In 60 matches over the course of 18 years, the duo pushed one another to their limits as they battled on the biggest stages for the most prestigious prizes in the sport.

Djokovic emerged victorious on 31 occasions, including their last meeting at the Paris Olympic Games in July.

There has always been plenty of respect between the two tennis legends both on and off the court, but there was one moment in 2023 when the two did not see eye to eye on a particular subject.

What did Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal disagree on?

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are the two male players with the most Grand Slam titles in history. The Spaniard has 22, while Djokovic holds 24 majors, a combined total of 46 of tennis’ biggest honours.

Djokovic passed Nadal’s Grand Slam tally after defeating Casper Ruud in straight sets to win the 2023 French Open.

Back in October of that year, Nadal claimed that Djokovic would have been frustrated if he did not end his career with the most number of majors to his name.

“‘I’m not frustrated for a simple reason – within my possibilities, I’ve done all I can to make things happen for me,’ Nadal told Spanish outlet Movistar.

“I think Novak feels more intensely [about] this than I do. Had he not achieved it, it may have been a bigger frustration for him. Maybe that is why he did it.

“I think he has had the ability to take ambition to the maximum. I think I’ve been ambitious too but a bit healthier, which allowed me to see things in a different way.”

Djokovic did not share the same perspective and told Sportal in response: “I have no intention of speaking in a negative light about him or Roger Federer – my respect towards them supersedes some negative opinions I might have.

“Again, that’s Rafa’s opinion and I, of course, don’t agree. I have my opinion, but I won’t share it as I don’t want us to go deeper into that. There is no need for that.”

What are some of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal’s greatest matches?

Djokovic and Nadal produced some of the greatest tennis matches of all time.

Arguably the first of their all-time classics came in the Madrid Open semi-final in 2009. In a match that lasted over four hours, Nadal came from a set down and saved match points before recording an epic 3-6 7-6(5) 7-6(9) victory.

Just under three years later, Djokovic and Nadal duelled for nearly six hours in a gruelling Australian Open final. The Serbian outlasted his rival 5-7 6-4 6-2 6-7(5) 7-5 to claim his third title at Melbourne Park and start one of the greatest individual seasons in tennis history.

The following year, Djokovic faced Nadal in the French Open semi-final as he pursued a first title on the Parisian clay. Nadal trailed 3-1 in the final set, but he battled back to claim a heroic five-set win and go on to win his eighth French Open title.

Djokovic and Nadal had another classic for the fans, this time at the 2018 Wimbledon Championships. With a spot in the final on the line and in a match that lasted over two days, the tennis icons produced some truly breathtaking rallies in an all-out war on SW19’s hallowed turf.

It was Djokovic who prevailed 6-4 3-6 7-6(9) 3-6 10-8 and he later claimed his fourth title at the All-England Club. The pair produced two more four-set epics at the French Open, with Djokovic winning in 2021 and Nadal emerging victorious in 2022.

Their last meeting at the Paris Olympics was not a classic, but it was the final meeting of what was a truly extraordinary sporting rivalry between two icons.
