Patrick McEnroe has analysed Carlos Alcaraz’s and highlighted an area where he thinks he is going wrong.

Many expected the Spaniard to go to the next level in 2025, but that has yet to take place.

He has claimed just one title so far this season and was unable to make any significant ground on Jannik Sinner at the top of the ATP rankings.

Carlos Alcaraz appears to be struggling for consistency at the moment, and Patrick McEnroe thinks he knows why.

What is the mistake that Patrick McEnroe thinks Carlos Alcaraz has been making?

Since the 2024 Olympics final, Alcaraz has struggled for consistency and this has been particularly evident in 2025.

He equalled his best result at the Australian Open by reaching the quarter-finals, before winning his first title of the season at the Rotterdam Open.

But since then Alcaraz suffered a quarter-final defeat in Qatar, failed to defend his Indian Wells title, and lost his opening match at the Miami Open to David Goffin.

As Alcaraz aims to find his best level, Patrick McEnroe thinks that Alcaraz’s shot selection has gone awry over the last nine months, which explains his inconsistent performances.

“The guys that win majors are somewhat predictable when it really counts. But Alcaraz has moved a little bit away from that,” McEnroe told Tennis.com.

“He’s an amazing shotmaker with a level of athleticism that’s just off the charts. That has hurt him in the last nine months. In that sense, he’s too much of a shotmaker. He hits his way into trouble.”

Carlos Alcaraz assesses his recent performances

Alcaraz is now at the Monte Carlo Masters where he is making his second appearance and his first since 2022.

The World number three is aiming for his first match win in Monaco after losing in the opening round to Sebastian Korda three years ago.

Ahead of the tournament, Alcaraz commented on the scrutiny around his recent form, and he remains unperturbed by it.

“I am really happy with the way I am playing,” the four-time Grand Slam champion told reporters.

“Since I started the year I have been playing great tennis. Tennis is not just about hitting the ball. It is about more than that. It is about mentality, physical side.”
