Rafael Nadal has played on the greatest courts that tennis has to offer.

Over his more than two-decade career, the Spaniard overcame the odds on more than one occasion both on and off the court.

Whether it was injury issues or competing against an inspired opponent, Rafael Nadal’s mental resilience enabled him to get over plenty of challenges.

The 38-year-old is regarded by many as the greatest competitor of all time and he illustrated that no matter what he had to face throughout his career.

Rafael Nadal names the toughest conditions he has played in

Nadal has won plenty of matches in different types of conditions.

The former World number one triumphed in slow and heavy conditions, on clay, hard and grass courts, indoors and outdoors. But Nadal has also found ways to be effective in extremely windy conditions, which is tough for all players.

There have been some matches that were significantly impacted by the wind, and Nadal once mentioned his clash with Tomas Berdych at Wimbledon in 2007 as the toughest conditions he has played in.

“I played at Wimbledon 2006 or 2007, I don’t know, because — 2007, I think. Yeah, 2007. Quarterfinals against Berdych. Unbelievable wind. Amazing,” he said back in 2009.

“Centre Court, yeah, amazing. In Benidorm two weeks ago, amazing, too. We practiced one day and — well, worse than today. Yeah, I had some matches with the wind, no?”

Despite the thigh conditions, Nadal overcame Berdych 7-6(1) 6-4 6-2 before going on to reach the Wimbledon semi-final for the second successive year. That was the third of Nadal’s 20 wins against the Czech player.

Rafael Nadal mentioned another match with really windy conditions

Another of Nadal’s matches played in very gusty conditions was the 2009 Indian Wells Masters.

He took on Andy Murray in the final, and claimed a comprehensive 6-1, 6-2 win despite how the wind affected the flight of the ball throughout the contest.

Murray let his frustrations get the better of him as he struggled to adjust to the conditions on court, whereas Nadal maintained his composure and coasted to victory. Post-match, Nadal believes he better equipped himself to deal with those conditions than his opponent.

“The conditions today were really difficult,” Nadal said after winning his second Indian Wells title. “But, you know, I think I have good strategy and I played a really good match with those conditions, no?

“Probably Andy didn’t play his best because of the conditions, but I think I played a really complete match, moving very well. I never stop the legs during all the match, and I think that was the key all today, no?

“I don’t know if I was a little bit more prepared than him today to play with these conditions. Maybe I think I accepted the conditions a little bit better than him.”
