Coco Gauff has seen her form completely flip on its head after a disappointing couple of months on the WTA Tour.
Gauff won her first nine matches of the 2025 season, as she helped USA win the United Cup on her tournament debut.
However, since Gauff lost in the Australian Open quarter-finals she has only won half of her matches on the WTA Tour.
This includes her most recent loss at the Miami Open, where Gauff was beaten by Magda Linette to add to the previous questions about the world number three.

The big question Jon Wertheim now has about Coco Gauff
The Miami Open was a very confusing tournament from the perspective of Gauff, who made history in her opening match of the tournament.
However, after watching Gauff lose to Linette just two matches later, tennis journalist Jon Wertheim has raised questions over the 2023 US Open champion’s recent form.
When speaking on the Served with Andy Roddick Podcast, Wertheim spoke about how vulnerable Gauff looks on court at the moment and what he thinks needs to change for her.
“I feel like our usual fall back is getting a little thin,” said Wertheim. “What do we usually say? She is winning ugly, she is learning to win when she doesn’t have her best stuff. She’s fighting.
“We talk about [Aryna] Sabalenka and Iga [Swiatek], one of the great rivalries in tennis right now is Coco against technique and Coco against her breakdowns. Can she overcome these days where she can’t find the court? Look at her stats in the defeat last week and you say yikes.
“In the other hand we have seen her win majors playing sub optimal tennis and win a lot of matches just grinding through. She is also capable of winning matches 0-0 like she did in Miami.
“I just don’t know how long we can stay on this trope of she is winning ugly and this will pay dividends later in her career when she knows she doesn’t have to be 100%. Because the flip side of that is that sometimes you just want to go and play to your capability.
“Watch those matches and just look at how many balls go to that forehand side. Look how many times the stat sheets have double figure double faults an hour into the match. I don’t know. I think the A level is there, but I also think that it has to weigh on your mind to have a game that can end up in the breakdown lane as easily as hers sometimes seems to.”
Can Coco Gauff return to form for the clay court season?
After a difficult run of form, Gauff will look to turn a page during the clay court season.
Gauff has a significant number of ranking points to defend over the coming weeks after an impressive 2024 campaign on the dirt.
This includes reaching the semi-finals of both the Italian Open and Roland Garros, as Gauff gained a total of 1,398 points on clay last year.
This is in comparison to just 195 for her compatriot Jessica Pegula, who is closing in on Gauff to become the American number one.
| Clay Court Tournament | Gauff’s Result in 2024 | Points Gauff is defending |
| Stuttgart Open | Quarter-final | 108 |
| Madrid Open | Fourth Round | 120 |
| Italian Open | Semi-final | 390 |
| Roland Garros | Semi-final | 780 |
Gauff is a former Roland Garros junior singles champion and reached her first senior final at the clay court major in 2022.
The world number three will be hoping to recreate some of these memories once again, as Gauff bids for Roland Garros glory and a return to the level that she is capable of.
