Iga Swiatek booked her place in the third round of the Indian Wells Open after winning her opening match against American star Kayla Day.

After earning a bagel in the first set, Swiatek was tested by the home hope in the second set when forced to a tiebreak.

The Pole ultimately came through the shootout to set up a clash with Maria Sakkari in round three at the WTA 1000 event.

Iga Swiatek’s incredible streak at WTA 1000 competitions

With her victory over Day, Swiatek claimed a record-extending 33rd consecutive opening match win at WTA 1000 level.

Her streak is the longest of any player since the inception of the format back in 2009, according to Opta Ace.

The players with the joint-second-longest such streak are Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka, who both won 23 straight, 10 less than Swiatek’s tally.

Iga Swiatek’s record at Indian Wells over the years

Prior to this year, Swiatek had made five appearances at the Indian Wells Open, where she has found success.

Following a fourth-round finish in her debut campaign back in 2021, Swiatek won her first Indian Wells title during the 2022 season.

She made the semifinals the next year, and in 2024, Swiatek added a second crown to her name in California.

Last season, Swiatek was knocked out in the semifinals by Mirra Andreeva, who went on to win the tournament.
