Thanasi Kokkinakis was unable to take to the court for his second round match at the Adelaide International.

Kokkinakis underwent surgery on his shoulder last year, after missing nearly the entire season.

Despite facing many physical setbacks in his career, Kokkinakis returned to winning ways at the Adelaide International after beating Sebastian Korda.

There were still injury concerns for Kokkinakis during this match, and the Adelaide local has now been forced to withdraw from his home tournament.

Thanasi Kokkinakis releases statement after withdrawing from Adelaide

Kokkinakis was scheduled to take to the court for his second round match against Shanghai Masters champion Valentin Vacherot.

However, just hours before the match was scheduled to take place, Kokkinakis announced that he was withdrawing.

In a social media post, Kokkinakis admitted that his arm was not ready yet, but suggested that he would return to the tournament in 2027.

Kokkinakis wrote, “Very sad to have to pull out of my favourite event. Unfortunately my arm isn’t quite ready yet after a year off.

“The support is always incredible and [I] love playing here. See you next year (love heart hand emojis) @adelaideinternational.”

Will Thanasi Kokkinakis play the Australian Open?

Kokkinakis has withdrawn from the Adelaide International due to injury just four days before the Australian Open main draw gets underway.

The Australian’s statement about his arm not being ready obviously raises concerns for his participation in Melbourne, but it could also be a similar situation to what Kokkinakis did in 2025.

Last year, Kokkinakis withdrew from the Adelaide International after playing two matches, but still went on to compete at the Australian Open.

However, after missing the entire rest of the season after the 2025 Australian Open, Kokkinakis may be more cautious in his approach this year.

Instead, Kokkinakis could follow his compatriot and friend Nick Kyrgios, who has chosen not to play singles at the Australian Open and will only compete in the doubles draw instead.

Kokkinakis and Kyrgios are doubles partners, with the duo winning the Australian Open title together in 2022.
