Denis Shapovalov is gearing up to make his seventh appearance at the Madrid Open this year.

Shapovalov won the Dallas Open in February, but has not been able to continue that form in the same way.

After winning his biggest career title to date, many expected Shapovalov to continue rising, but he has only won 50% of his matches since.

This included a recent retirement defeat, which resulted in an eye-catching celebration from his opponent.

Tennis fans laugh as Denis Shapovalov appears to imitate Diego Dedura-Palomero

Shapovalov played 17-year-old Diego Dedura-Palomero in the first round of the BMW Open in Munich last week.

However, things did not pan out in the way that many expected them to, as Shapovalov found himself a set and a break down.

It was at this point that Shapovalov retired from the match, awarding 2008-born Dedura-Palomero with his first victory on the ATP Tour.

What got people talking though was Dedura-Palomero’s celebration, where he screamed before appearing to lay a cross in the ground.

Dedura-Palomero received criticism for this, and now Shapovalov has responded in his own practise session at the Madrid Open.

In a newly released video, Shapovalov can be seen imitating the Dedura-Palomero’s celebration, while the teenager was on the court next to him.

This has received a big reaction on social media, with many fans loving what Shapovalov has done.

One person on X (formerly known as Twitter) said, “This is brilliant.”

Another person simply said, “Love shapo.”

Followed by another finding the situation hysterical, “HAHAHA.”

Some fans suggested that the Canadian had every right to retaliate, “He is so right, there is no world where a victory against Shapovalov deserves to be celebrated like this.”

Who is Denis Shapovalov playing at the Madrid Open?

Despite the humorous nature of his imitation, Shapovalov will now be looking to move on from last week’s situation.

Dedura-Palomero will now be an issue for Shapovalov this week, after the German teenager lost in qualifying.

Shapovalov has produced mixed results at the Madrid Open over the years, with his best coming on his debut in 2018 when he reached the semi-finals.

However, since then Shapovalov has been unable to surpass the third round, which he did last year before losing to Alexander Zverev.

After rising back up the rankings in recent months, Shapovalov will begin his 2025 campaign in the second round against either Kei Nishikori or Aleksandar Vukic.
