Rafael Jodar’s pursuit of winning an ATP title in front of a home crowd came to an end in the semifinals of the Barcelona Open.
Jodar fell to Arthur Fils in the final four of the ATP 500 tournament, with the Frenchman being forced to come back from a set down to seal the win, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The 19-year-old Spaniard recorded a stunning campaign, during which he did not drop a set en route to the clash with Fils.
Is Arthur Fils a genuine threat to Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner?
After capturing his maiden tour-level crown in Marrakech earlier this month, Jodar beat Jaume Munar, Camilo Ugo Carabelli and Cameron Norrie in Barcelona.
His performances throughout the week were outstanding, but perhaps more impressive were his words after the defeat to Fils.

Rafael Jodar praised after his semifinal run at the Barcelona Open
As per Jose Moron on X, Jodar said: “I know there’s a lot of talk after winning in Morocco and because of the support from the crowd here, but I have to keep following my own path.
“Everyone has their own progression. It doesn’t mean that just because I’ve won a lot of matches or I’m doing really well that I’m going to go as far as them.
“I have to focus on myself, try to improve, and make the most of the opportunity in the next tournament in Madrid.”
In response, one fan said: “You can see a lot of potential in him, and he’s very young; it’s clear he’ll achieve great things if he keeps working like this. It’s incredible what he’s done in these recent tournaments.”

This user claimed: “Very focused. And very brave, in the statements and on the court. He’s going to go very far.”
Another stated: “The boy is very good and will be yet another problem in the circuit, Jodar deserves congratulations for the great year so far.”
Finally, one fan said: “Jodar has more potential than Fonseca. He strikes very powerfully from both sides of the court. Very, very strong. And Fils is right, he looks much more like Sinner than Alcaraz.”
Jodar has recorded a win-loss record of 13-7 so far this season, and is currently 42nd in the live ATP rankings.
