Taylor Fritz thinks people will be surprised as he picks ‘crazy’ match as his best of the 2025 season

Taylor Fritz has enjoyed another fantastic season on the ATP Tour, which has involved winning two titles.

Fritz has taken his career tally to 10 ATP titles, with the world number five having triumphed in Stuttgart and Eastbourne.

The American defeated Alexander Zverev in the final of the former, and Jenson Brooksby in the final of the latter.

Fritz is now focusing his efforts on the Japan Open in Tokyo, where he is already into the second round, having won the event in 2022.

He defeated Gabriel Diallo 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(7-3) in his opener this year, and now takes on Nuno Borges in his next match.

Fritz may want to add the comeback win to the list of his best matches in 2025, which he revealed for Tennis Channel just before last month’s Cincinnati Open.

He said: “All right, so I’m not going to do this based off of how well I think I played in the match. I’m going to do it based off of just the quality of the match I’d say to watch. And I might switch these around because it’s a lot going on here.

“But let’s start with the Stuttgart final at number five. I feel like that’s going to be on the board somewhere. First title of the year.

“I feel like United Cup (versus Hubert Hurkacz) has to be kind of up there because that was like a big match and that was in the finals. Let’s put that at two.”

Discussing his Wimbledon win over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, he said: “Let’s put this one at three here. This was a really crazy match. Probably should have lost it. I think three is a good spot for that one.”

And talking of his Miami Open clash with Matteo Berrettini, Fritz noted: “I don’t know if I should be biased because it’s a Slam, so a Slam is bigger, but just out of feeling, I thought this was actually the best… the craziest match to me that I played all year.

“Most fun, best energy, I feel like this was a really crazy match. So I’m going to put me and Matteo in Miami at number one.”

And struggling to complete the list, he said: “And then it’s between the Toronto and the Eastbourne final. But that one too, oh jeez. I’m going to put the Wimbledon one (versus Diallo) here (number four).”

“I think I’m pretty happy with that list. I think people are probably going to be surprised at my number one, but I just remember playing that match and being like that was a really just insane match.”

Fritz has certainly been involved in plenty of entertaining matches this season, which definitely isn’t over yet.

He still has a lot to play for, including the ATP Finals in Turin in November, having lost last year’s final to Jannik Sinner.

This year, however, he’s satisfied with the drama he’s provided thus far, having also been asked if there was any match from his options that he thinks deserves a spot in his top five.

He replied: “Trying to think here. I’m going through all the tournaments we had right now. No, no, I think as far as entertainment goes like I said, I wasn’t doing this based off of like how well I played.

“Like there’s matches I definitely played better that aren’t on the list, but they’re not great matches. Maybe I played really well because it wasn’t a super tight match, but in terms of entertainment of the match, these are the ones.”

Further entertainment can be expected from the American, who also just helped fire Team World to Laver Cup success.

Fritz enjoyed a superb Laver Cup, and perhaps would have picked his win over Carlos Alcaraz as his best match of the season had he been making his choices now.
