Taylor Fritz has suffered a shock early exit at the Shanghai Masters, losing in the third round to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
Fritz was handed a bye in the first round of the ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai, before beating Fabian Marozsan in round two.
Mpetshi Perricard shocked Fritz in Shanghai, winning their battle 6-4, 7-5 after one hour and 25 minutes of action.
The American entered the tournament after reaching the final of the Japan Open, which he lost to Carlos Alcaraz.
Alcaraz praised Fritz after their final in Tokyo, where the latter fell just short of a third ATP title of the 2025 season.

Taylor Fritz shares what he plans to do after his shock defeat at the Shanghai Masters
Fritz quickly moved on to Shanghai as Alcaraz decided to withdraw from the event, with the former now sharing an update on his next plans after losing to Mpetshi Perricard.
The American world number four wrote on Instagram: “Brutal conditions out there yesterday – respect to my opponent for a tough, gritty win.
“If you know me, you know I love to compete more than anything. That being said it’s been A LOT lately, and this week it’s clear to me that I’ve hit my limit.
“Thank you for all the love in Shanghai. It’s time to take a very short and needed rest to recharge and finish the year strong.”
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard can live up to his hype at the Shanghai Masters
Fritz is by no means the only player to be feeling the impact of a busy schedule, with Alcaraz deciding not to take on Shanghai in order to rest and recover.
Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner retired with cramp against Tallon Griekspoor in round three, while Daria Kasatkina will miss the rest of the season to recover from a busy period.
But Mpetshi Perricard is showing no such signs of fatigue as he looks to really come into his own this season.
The Frenchman has shown real promise in his brief career so far, with Jim Courier backing Mpetshi Perricard to be a big threat earlier this season.
He has failed to really come to life since that praise, but the 22-year-old has just issued a real statement by defeating Fritz.
Having also already knocked out Luca Nardi, the world number 37 can continue his promise by overcoming Holger Rune in the round of 16.
