Taylor Fritz says what officials told him before his French Open match which had him saying ‘no chance’

Taylor Fritz complained about a scheduling change at the French Open.

The 26-year-old was aiming for a strong response after losing his opening match at the Geneva Open before arriving in Paris.

The American number one opened his campaign in the French capital against Argentina’s Federico Coria on Tuesday, but all was not what it seemed in the locker room before the match.

After securing a four-set win to start his pursuit of a first Grand Slam title, Fritz told the story of what happened when he found out the match schedule had been changed.

What did Taylor Fritz say about the match schedule?

Before Fritz claimed his second victory over Coria, the match schedule was altered and therefore gave him less time to prepare.

This left the ninth seed very frustrated and he explained how he had to battle for more time to warm up before taking to the court.

“The toughest thing about it was the fact that the match just got moved from the schedule to get put on,” he told reporters.

“We were about 30 minutes out of the match before, it was a three out of five men’s match, so it’s pretty safe that it is going to be at least two hours.

“So I was just chilling on the couch in the locker room and I’m under the impression there is a minimum two hours before I play and they tell me I’m on in 30 minutes.

“It’s really tough when they tell me I’m on in 30 minutes, which I pushed for. I said no chance, and pushed it to 45 minutes. But it’s still so tough to mentally prepare to go on in that time when I had it set in my mind that it was a minimum of two and a half hours.”

Who does Taylor Fritz play next?

Fritz recovered from a set down to defeat Coria 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 and advance to the second round of the French Open.

He will next play Serbia’s Dušan Lajović, who beat Roman Safiullin in a gripping five-set battle to reach round two.

The pair have played on two previous occasions and they have one win each. Lajović won the pair’s previous clay court meeting at the Lyon Open back in 2018.

“I think it’s going to be a very very tough match, he’s very good on clay but we’ll see,” Fritz said about his next opponent. “I like my chances a lot more than I did back then [2018 Lyon].”
