Taylor Fritz commented on if male American players talk about their Grand Slam drought.

The United States once dominated the ATP Tour, with the likes of John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras leading the way.

But while the American women, led by Venus and Serena Williams and most recently Coco Gauff, have had consistent Grand Slam success in the 21st century, the same cannot be said for the men.

The last male American player to win a Grand Slam was Andy Roddick back in 2003, and this is something nobody would have seen coming.

American tennis is currently on the up with five male US players now in the ATP top 20 for the first time since 1997, while on the WTA Tour, America currently has four women ranked inside the top 10.

But the next step for America’s men is to end the 21-year drought of winning at the highest level, and they certainly have the talent and desire to achieve that.

While this is a goal for the players, Taylor Fritz commented on this issue and says it is not something they discuss among one another.

“I don’t think we talk about the fact that nobody has won a slam, it’s kind of obvious, we all know that. We all want to be the ones to end it but we don’t really talk about that,” Fritz said after reaching the second round of the US Open.

“We have talked about the fact we have got five guys in the top 20, we have a lot of good players, but not so much about the fact nobody has won one.”

Who was the last American man to win a Grand Slam?

The last male tennis player from the United States to win a Grand Slam was Andy Roddick in 2003.

The 41-year-old was the fourth seed in the 2003 US Open behind Juan Carlos Ferrero, Roger Federer and top seed Andre Agassi.

Roddick defeated Tim Henman in the opening round, and needed four sets to get past Ivan Ljubičić in round two.

The former World number one then came back from the brink in the semi-finals against David Nalbandian.

Down two sets, Roddick completed a 6-7(4) 3-6 7-6(7) 6-1 6-3 comeback to reach the championship match, where he beat Ferrero in straight sets to win his lone Grand Slam title.
