Taylor Fritz has enjoyed a relatively successful 2024 thus far, but it always feels like despite his fine form, he is not quite reaching the heights many think he should do.
With a thunderous serve and an otherwise really well-rounded game, all the components are there for the American to thrive in elite-level tournaments.
And yet, for whatever reason, he still has yet to even reach a Grand Slam semi-final and has just one ATP 1000 title to his name.
Injuries have not been kind to him, admittedly, and those issues very nearly threatened to derail this year again ahead of Wimbledon and the Olympics.
Taylor Fritz provides injury update
Speaking ahead of his Queen’s opener, which he won earlier today against Taro Daniel, the American would actually reveal that he has been suffering from an injury for a few weeks.
Sustained at Roland Garros, it would explain his rather uninspiring run at the Grand Slam, especially given how severe it seemed.
Now supposedly feeling better, it could be questioned how he has recovered so quickly from such a serious ailment.

He gave Tennis TV the lowdown: ‘I went home. I really wanted to play last week but I was injured. I hurt myself at French Open and I made the injury significantly worse in trying to play through my last match at French Open.
‘So I had to go home, I had to get get some scans, I had to make sure I was alright. I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to make it this week as well but I’ve had a really big recovery the last maybe two or three days to where I now think I’m going to be good to go so I’m happy to be here.
‘It was kind of like an adductor, pelvic area. A lot of people thought there was a good chance I had a sports hernia so I thought there was a pretty solid chance I was going to have to go do a surgery and maybe hope to be back in time for Wimbledon or after if it’s a quick recovery.
‘I had all the symptoms, everything. Turns out it might just be a little bit of a strain on top of some other stuff, some inflammation caused from a lot of the sliding on the clay. But like I said, I wasn’t feeling good but I’ve really had a miraculous recovery the last couple of days.’
Taylor Fritz has to start winning the big titles
As noted earlier, Fritz has all the necessary attributes to succeed on the biggest stages.
Having first emerged as the outstanding young player on the youth circuit, back in 2015 he stunned the tennis world by reaching at least the quarterfinal of all four junior Grand Slam tournaments, including the final at the French Open where he lost to Tommy Paul, and the final at the US Open where he then defeated his compatriot.
But since entering the main ATP circuit, he has failed to live up to that potential thus far, despite hovering around the top ten for some time, reaching a career-high of fifth last year.

But if he is to start usurping the likes of Novak Djokovic and challenging Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, he needs to find another level.
His fitness and his mindset must improve, and only then will he start claiming the big titles he craves.
