Death, taxes, and a Daniil Medvedev match at a Grand Slam producing box office entertainment.
The Russian has only gone and done it again and despite another first-round exit at a major tournament, everyone is talking about Medvedev’s on-court antics once again.
The headline is that Medvedev is out of the US Open. This time he’s been ousted in five sets by French outsider Benjamin Bonzi, who regained his composure to close out the win that had seemed certain to come in straight sets.
Medvedev is expecting a big fine following a remarkable outburst when Bonzi was serving for the match at the end of the third set.
The world number 13 went berserk after a photographer entered the court ready to film Bonzi winning the match, with the umpire allowing the Frenchman another first serve – much to Medvedev’s angst.
It’s proved a big talking point among the players and it would appear as though Taylor Fritz thinks Medvedev might have had a point to react in the manner he did.
What Taylor Fritz said about the umpire’s call in the Daniil Medvedev match
Medvedev might be out but Fritz has marched on following his straight-sets victory over fellow American Emilio Nava.
Clearly, he was taking a look at Medvedev’s match and posted a series of posts on social media to vent his frustration at the whole incident.
He said: “A Photographer walking on the court when he’s not supposed to could’ve just changed the entire match.
“He should get a first call but the call ends up backfiring and hurting him because of the pause, having to sit on match point for 10 min and then the crowd getting super into it against you. Unless Bonzi hits a huge first serve and gets a free point off the pause, then the whole thing is actually really bad for him.
“It sucks for the returner and it’s not fair but at the same time, someone literally running on the court, who isn’t supposed to be on the court between serves, is insane and not just something you play on through. After Allensworth calls at the guy not to come on the court, and there’s an interruption caused, you can’t make him hit a second.”
Medvedev has soul-searching to do as 2025 draws to a close
This incident clearly impacted Bonzi and he was made to sweat more than he needed to in order to beat Medvedev and progress to the next round.
After losing the third set 7-6, he was then battered 6-0 in the fourth and at that stage the writing appeared to be on the wall for the unseeded French player.
However, he managed to reset after the fourth and with Medvedev fighting his own demons within his game, he was able to find enough courage to send him packing.
For a player who has won a major title before, Medvedev’s form in the Grand Slam events this year has been nothing short of pathetic and he must use the rest of 2025 to regain as much confidence as possible ahead of next year.
