Taylor Fritz points out the two mistakes he made against Carlos Alcaraz which cost him the match

Taylor Fritz played some brilliant tennis against Carlos Alcaraz, but came up short in the end.

Winning the first set, Fritz looked in great shape to go 2-0 in the Jimmy Connors Group, before the Spaniard fought back.

In three sets, Alcaraz defeated Fritz 6-7, 7-5, 6-3, to move within touching distance of a semifinal spot.

The American was understandably frustrated afterwards, having lost another big match from a winning position.

During his post-match press conference, Fritz highlighted the two mistakes that cost him the win against Alcaraz.

The American star knows he made errors in the crucial moments of his round-robin match vs Alcaraz.

“I mean, I really believe if I hit my forehand just a little bit better on some shots, I’m up a break in the second and I’m putting myself in a position to serve out the match,” said Fritz.

“I mean, the ones that come to my mind, there was one game 15-30, I missed a forehand that I should have at least put away or hit a good enough shot to win the point on.

“I did the same thing on a 30-All, on one of the break points. I let the overhead bounce. 

“I probably should have sent it out of the air and accepted it if I missed it. I think that was a good opportunity to win the point.”

Fritz was frustrated with himself for not hitting the ball well enough when it mattered most.

“There were a lot of opportunities,” he said.

“I’d say the thing that’s frustrating is most of the opportunities that come to my mind were all on me, actually having the ball that I want to really attack on, just not hitting it well enough.”

The world number five was then asked the following question about his rivalry with Alcaraz.

“I mean, recently I did win one time, you know?” replied Fritz.

“But I mean, out of the last two matches, yeah, I felt like when I played him in Saudi, like I said, I didn’t even really have a chance.

“I wasn’t ever getting looks in that match to be aggressive, to pull the trigger. He was just always in control. A bit like that in Tokyo, as well.

“The first two sets of this match, I felt like I was getting a lot of opportunities. That was because I was returning really well, returning really aggressively.

“I don’t think it’s tough to stay focused on the serve. I don’t think the serve is really an issue in the match.”

Fritz’s serve was solid throughout the match, firing 14 aces, to Alcaraz’s nine in Turin.

He’ll no doubt hope to keep those numbers up when he returns to play his final group stage game.

Next up for Fritz is Australia’s Alex de Minaur, the only player without a win in the ‘Jimmy Connors Group’.

Should Fritz take down De Minaur, he will guarantee himself a place in the last four, although he could still qualify without a win, depending on what happens elsewhere.

With all four players still in with a chance of qualification, you won’t want to miss any of the action on the final day of ‘Jimmy Connors Group’ action.

Fritz will play De Minaur, and Alcaraz will play Musetti on Thursday, November 13.
