Taylor Fritz is among the Team World players set to be disappointed after losing the Laver Cup to Team Europe.

Ben Shelton labelled Fritz a ‘veteran’ during the tournament, with the latter having just played his fourth Laver Cup.

He now has a 50/50 record at the competition, having won in London and Vancouver but losing in Geneva and now Berlin.

Fritz is adding variety to his game, with that approach helping him impress at the Uber Arena for Team World.

The American partnered with compatriot Shelton to beat Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev, with Fritz then beating the German in their singles match.

Taylor Fritz makes Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz claim after recent matches

He did, however, lose his singles clash with Alcaraz, with the Spaniard clinching the trophy for Team Europe with that win.

Speaking in Team World’s final Laver Cup press conference, Fritz explained the differences between taking on Alcaraz and world number one Jannik Sinner.

“It’s tough to compare the two because the conditions are so incredibly different,” said Fritz. “It’s so much slower here versus US Open so it’s very tough.

“But I did feel that Jannik maybe can serve a bit better, but from the ground I felt I had no time to play today, getting into rallies and trying to feel things out, I didn’t get to settle in, I was always being rushed and moved. I definitely felt that I had less breathing room against Carlos. But both insane players.”

Taylor Fritz enjoys superb month at the US Open and Laver Cup

Fritz does, of course, have very fresh memories of coming up against Sinner, having lost to him in the US Open final.

The Italian won their Flushing Meadows meeting earlier this month in straight sets, but the runner-up certainly didn’t go down without a fight.

Fritz was definitely under pressure on home soil, with the US Open crowd having been desperate for an American winner.

It wasn’t meant to be in the end, but the new world number seven can be extremely proud after reaching his first-ever Grand Slam final.

Unfortunately, however, he was rewarded with immediate ties against world number two Zverev and world number three Alcaraz.
