Andy Murray watched on as Novak Djokovic suffered another opening round exit, this time at the Madrid Open.

Murray coached Djokovic since the Australian Open, with the unlikely partnership producing mixed results since then.

However, the clay court season has not got off to a strong start so far, with Djokovic losing at the Madrid Open and the Monte Carlo Masters in his only matches at the respective tournaments.

This has brought up big questions about Djokovic’s future and his coaching relationship with Murray.

Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey predict whether Andy Murray will coach Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon

Djokovic was beaten by Matteo Arnaldi, 6-3 6-4, in his first appearance at the Madrid Open in three years.

This came just days after Djokovic was seen expressing his frustrations on the practise court in a sweary rant.

When talking about Djokovic’s recent form and coaching relationship with Murray, former American tennis players Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey discussed how successful they think it has been so far.

While Johnson in particular did not appear convinced that Murray’s involvement would reward Djokovic with a 25th major, both himself and Querrey believe that it will continue until at least Wimbledon.

“The Murray partnership is starting to pay off because of all the anger that Novak is showing in practice,” Johnson said on the Nothing Major Podcast. “The Murray demeanour finally getting into the Novak brain on the practice court!”

“It worked at the beginning of the year in Australia. He has completed the game of tennis. What is there left to win other than a Grand Slam? I think it is just hard for him to get his juices going for these 1000 level tournaments when the only thing that is going to further his legacy is a Slam title.

“So unless we see something different at Roland Garros or Wimbledon in the summer it is hard to see right now and it’s very weird to watch Novak playing tennis because he had an aura of invincibility during the entirety of our careers. It is very strange to watch him lose matches like this consecutively.

“I don’t see the Murray partnership paying off, but it would be a weird time to have them not be together at Wimbledon. They partner all year and then they are not together for Wimby? My assumption is that it goes to Wimby and then I don’t know. It would be weird if he fired him at Queen’s.”

Querrey responded, “It feels like you are with him through the grass court season otherwise that Wimbledon crowd could turn on you.

Johnson agreed, “Exactly. He doesn’t want that so for sure I think Murray is in the box for Wimby, no doubt.”

Novak Djokovic’s results at tournaments with Andy Murray

Although Murray has been Djokovic’s coach since the off-season, he has not been present for all of the Serbian’s tournaments in 2025.

However, Murray was in the coaching box for Djokovic when he reached the Miami Open final last month, which is his best result of the season so far.

The three tournaments that Djokovic played without Murray in his box came at the Brisbane International, Qatar Open and most recently the Monte Carlo Masters.

Djokovic is now expected to head to the Italian Open, where he is a former six-time champion.

It is currently unclear as to whether Murray will be with Djokovic in Rome, as they look to get some final match practise in ahead of Roland Garros.
